How do you use a custom PowerPoint template with copilot slide generation?

Hi!

My company have created a custom PowerPoint template and uploaded it to our organisation's 365. I have the Copilot studio license and have been playing around with the PowerPoint generation from file feature. However, whenever I create it this way, PowerPoint only gives me one style of slide from my presentation template, ignoring the other 5 I have uploaded.

I have tried renaming the slides to see if it will pick it up, to no avail. It is currently only using the title and agenda slides from my template, ignoring the content style slides.

Does anyone know how to rectify this? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Martha,

Thank you for raising your concern to Microsoft Support Community.

When using Copilot to generate slides from a custom PowerPoint template, it often defaults to using only one layout, typically the first layout in the Slide Master, unless you guide it explicitly. Even if your organization has uploaded a full branded template with multiple layouts, Copilot may not automatically rotate through them.

Microsoft recommends the following steps to ensure Copilot uses all your custom layouts:

    1. Use the Slide Master View:
    • Open your template in PowerPoint.
    • Go to View > Slide Master.
    • Ensure each layout under the master slide is properly named and structured.
    1. Follow Copilot’s Naming Conventions:

    Use layout names like:

    • Title Slide
    • Agenda Slide
    • Content Slide
    • Image and Text Slide
    • Comparison Slide
    • Quote Slide

These names help Copilot identify the purpose of each layout

    1. Ensure Placeholder Variety:
    • Include different text box sizes and image placeholders.
    • Avoid placing decorative elements over placeholders.
    • Make sure each layout has a clear purpose (e.g., text-heavy, image-heavy, mixed).
    1. Customize Theme Fonts and Colors:

Set these in the Slide Master so they apply consistently across layouts.

    1. Test with Copilot:

After updating your template, regenerate a presentation using Copilot.

If it still defaults to limited layouts, try using the starter template provided by Microsoft and adapt it to your brand

Microsoft provides a Copilot-optimized starter template you can download and adapt:
