MS PLANNER - how do I @tag someone in a conversation within a To-Do, or how to direct a sub tasks in a todo to someone?

It's been a few years since this question has been asked. Microsoft Planner would be substantially more useful with the ability to tag colleagues on cards in the comments and within to-do items. why is this so difficult for Microsoft to accomplish when Trello, Asana, and so many other platforms have it built in as part of their core functionality?

Thanks for responding. I often assign projects and tasks to multiple team members, but want to tag individuals for specific to-dos, and in comments. Literally every single other platform that I've worked with that's similar to Planner has the capability to tag individual users in tasks, comments, etc. The fact that MS can't figure this out is disheartening. Is there any plan to provide this functionality?

    Hi Jeremy,

Thank you a lot for your responding and idea about Microsoft Planner.

For this limitation you’ve encountered, I do understand the inconvenience and sorry about it.

Due to this situation, I personally agree that it's inconvenient you can't tag individuals for specific tasks during work. In that case, I sincerely recommend you go to Feedback community to vote this similar feedback: (find out similar feedback, if not provide the feedback forum link (Ideas · Community). Our product team is in charge of the site, and they constantly check customer reviews and feedback, The higher votes, the more attention the related team will pay on. Good day, Jeremy! Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community! I have reviewed your request. Let me confirm that you want to know how to:

    • @mention (tag) someone in a comment or conversation within a To-Do task in Microsoft Planner.
    • Assign sub-tasks (Checklist items) to specific team members.

For more information, Microsoft Planner currently does not support @mentions in task comments or assigning individual checklist items (sub-tasks) to different users. These features are common in tools like Trello or Asana, but Planner has limited collaboration features in this area. Here are the best available workarounds you can try:

    1. Assigning Tasks to People
    • You can assign entire tasks (not sub-tasks) to one or more people:
      1. Open the task in Planner.
      2. Use the "Assign" field to select one or more team members.

    1. Using Comments to Notify
    • While you can’t @mention, you can:
      • Write the person’s name in the comment (e.g., “John, please review this”).
      • The assigned person will get a notification when a comment is added.

    1. Use Microsoft Teams Integration
    • If your Planner board is connected to a Microsoft Teams channel
      • Use the Teams conversation tab to @mention people and discuss tasks.
      • This helps bridge the gap in Planner’s tagging limitations.
    1. Use Microsoft To Do for Subtasks
    • If subtasks are important, consider using Microsoft To Do, which allows assigning individual tasks (but not checklist items) and integrates with Planner via Microsoft 365.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.Best Regards,Hoang-D - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
