How to make the dotted line in MS Word?

I downloaded a file from somewhere and found that it contains some dotted lines that were not typed one by one. When I press the Enter key, a new dotted line appears. But I cannot figure out how it is made. Can anyone answer me? Thank you.

The Borders and Shading dialog box hasn't changed much over the years.

To access the inside horizontal borders, just make sure that you select at least two continuous text paragraphs before you visit the dialog box. See the screen shot in my previous reply.

The sample document is just set up with paragraph borders and there is an inside horizontal border specified, so that borders display in between paragraphs. I think we have covered this previously in the thread.

Note that with paragraph borders, if you ever type more than single-line paragraphs, you will only see the border at the bottom of each paragraph. Maybe that is what you require.

The only way to mimic lines that you can "write on" would be to add a table with horizontal borders in a text box behind the text. The result would be the appearance of lined paper. You'd have to set the line spacing of the document to a fixed amount which corresponds to the distance between table borders.

This may be a bit tricky to maintain.

The easiest solution (well, it requires some initial fiddling) is to turn the whole document into lined paper if you add a table with horizontal borders to the page header so that the table repeats on all pages. That won't necessarily help when setting up a form, though.

Page borders are not the same as paragraph borders. The button for paragraph borders is in the Paragraph group on the Home tab.

Looking at your sample document, I can tell that the lines are paragraph bottom borders. See the screen shot below.

There is no way to successfully type on top of a paragraph border, as it moves with the paragraph.

It would be possible to set up a table in a text box which is positioned behind the text to create the impression that you are typing "on" the lines. You will have to adjust the Line Spacing to match the distance between table horizontal border lines.

P.S. You may already know this, but the reason that nonprinting characters look different on your system is likely that you have installed support for one or more non-Latin languages.
