Need help with OneDrive downloading over 150gb of data to my computer, and I can’t find out where it’s stored to delete it.

Background: I opened OneDrive via the file explorer to click and drag folders into a web version of OneDrive. Since the files were only in the cloud, I thought nothing of it until my computer gave me a storage error message. When I checked the system menu, I was left with only 4gb of space. It seems OneDrive was downloading all the files I was transferring.

What I’ve tried:

  • All my folders show the cloud icon, meaning they are cloud-based only.
  • I’ve deleted temporary files via Disk Cleanup and via %temp%.
  • I’ve tried storage sense.
  • I’ve right-clicked all OneDrive folders and selected Free Up Space.
  • I’ve removed all folders from the Choose Folders menu within OneDrive settings (except for Personal Vault which it won’t allow me to change).
  • I quit OneDrive and restarted the computer.
  • I’ve unlinked the account and then re-linked it, along with restarts.
  • I’ve searched on this topic and tried to clear cache but receive and error message that the location doesn’t exist (which doesn’t make sense considering OneDrive is on my computer and besides my current issue OneDrive works).
  • I’ve unlinked the account and tried going to C\users\onedrive and deleting but that did not work (allegedly this is where the local files are downloaded and stored?).
  • None of my computer folders (Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Music, Video) are set to automatically back up (all turned off).
  • Files On Demand is on (automatically turned on with the version of OneDrive) and I’ve tried the Free Up Disk Space option within the Files On Demand box (but this just brings up the windows explorer folder of my OneDrive which I assume they want to you right-click, which I’ve already done).
  • The only option I have is to factory reset the laptop but I can’t even do that because the factory reset requires about 30gb of space and OneDrive only left me with 4gb.

Is this a syncing issue where it was supposed to clear the local files after the transfer to the web version? There are no syncing error messages and no syncing error icons. Says Up To Date.

OneDrive version: Build 25.056.0324.0003 (64-bit)

Update: I performed a DNS cache flush and it worked! Looks like the system was not properly clearing temporary files.
