How to open a PDF document without it automatically trying to convert to word?

When opening a PDF document or a scanned item in word, i get the following message "word will not covert your PDF to an editable work document. This may take a while. The resulting word doc will be optimized to allow you to edit the text, so it might not look exactly like the original PDF, especially if the original document file contained lots of graphics." Which is exactly what happens. When the document opens, not all of the content is visible. In my efforts to problem solve and fix the issue, I tried converting a word doc to PDF by going to save as, and then changing the document from word to PDF in the drop down. I received the error message, sorry but we couldn't find a program to open this file. What are my next steps in being able to open a PDF document without it automatically trying to convert to word? Thank you.

Hi Leah, if may be that pdf's were opening with Edge or some other pdf reader, which has somehow been removed from your computer. Thank you for the feedback, and very pleased you are up and running.

Thank you for the info. I downloaded Adobe Acrobat reader and that solved the problem! What is odd and curious about this issue is that this issue hasn't been happening the whole time I've had my computer. I've had this computer for a couple of years, but this issue started out of the blue a few months ago. Odd.

    Thank you for your help!

PDF and .docx are two different file formats.

As you've noticed, documents converted from .pdf to .docx are not the same.

They might look the same but they are not. They are much harder to edit than .docx files opened in Word.

WordWizard is correct that you want a program or App that is designed to open pdf files as pdf files.

Acrobat Reader is the best known.

Note that pdf files are not designed to be editable, by nature.

There are pdf editors, though, like Adobe Acrobat, that do edit them.

When you open a PDF, Word will automatically convert it so you can edit it. If you only want to view the PDF you need to use a PDF viewer like Adobe Reader (it's free), or you can use the Chrome browser and press Ctrl + O on your keyboard.
