Excel Copy-Paste error "Microsoft Excel Cannot Paste The Data" Office 365 Apps For Enterprise

ISSUE:

Approximately 4 weeks ago I suddenly could no longer copy cells and then paste them to Excel on the same spreadsheet. Nor could I paste the data into other applications both Microsoft and non-Microsoft. When attempting to paste into the same spreadsheet I would get "Microsoft Excel Cannot Paste the Data". When attempting to past into non-Microsoft, I get no error just a quick mouse icon circle. It acts like it pasted the data but doesn't.

However, I can copy from other applications into Excel but once the data is there trying to copy/paste to anything else fails.

ATTEMPTED FIXES:

  1. Run in Safe Mode - Issue persists
  2. Repair Office Applications - Issue persists
  3. Restart PC - Issue Persists
  4. Turn On/Off Clipboard History - Issue Persists

I can get it to paste though if I double click on the cell, manually highlight the contents of the cell, click on another cell and paste the data. This works fine. BUT if I try to select and copy the whole cell, it won't paste.

Not sure what else I have tried. Any help would be welcome. Thank You in advance.

I recently saw that Office said it would update Office for me. Today I opened a CSV and could not copy/paste anything.
I have Excel 2506 (Build 18925.20158). I close Excel down completely. Opened Excel, clicked on New Spreadsheet. Type "test" in A1 and hit TAB. Then clicked on A1 and pressed CTRL-C. The Paste Icon turns on, as soon as I move the cursor off A1 the Paste Icon goes back to being off.

When look at the Windows Clipboard it is empty.

If I go to the Formular Bar and select the word "test" then press CTRL-C that word is copied and I can paste that anywhere i want. Of course that does not help be because I need to concatenate three columns on the CSV data and copy the result to paste into a PuTTY session.

I disabled all addons, Acrobat PDF creator was the only active one and I never saw that before so I do not know how long it was active. I also disabled CoPilot to see if that was the issue. Neither of those helped.

    Luckily LibreCalc saved my day.

    Hi Dustin,

thanks for responding so quickly. One additional note: I have had a report of another user having this issue. They are not a person who would be able to modify anything or install applications on their computer. Below are my answers to your questions:

    Account & Licensing

    1. Is your current account a personal Microsoft account or a work account provided by your organization?   Work Account
    2. Is your account part of a Microsoft 365 tenant managed by your company or IT department?   Yes, it is on the Tenant I believe
    3. What type of Office license do you have?
(e.g., Microsoft 365 subscription, Office 2019/2021 perpetual license)

    Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise

    Environment Details

    1. What version and build of Excel are you currently using?
(Go toFile > Account > About Exceland copy the full version info)

Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2506 Build 16.0.18925.20076) 64-bit

    1. What version of Windows are you running?
      Windows 10
    2. Is Excel installed locally or accessed via a virtual desktop or remote environment?

It appears to be installed Locally

    File & Behavior

    1. Does this issue occur with all Excel files or only specific ones? ALL
    2. Where is the affected file stored?   Local
(e.g., Local drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Network drive)
    3. Are you using any Excel add-ins? If so, could you try disabling them and let us know if the issue persists?   I am not
    4. Are you using any third-party clipboard managers or antivirus/security software? No
    5. When pasting into other applications (e.g., Notepad, Word), does the issue occur with all of them or only specific ones?   All
    6. Have you tried using Excel Online (via Office.com)? If so, does the issue occur there as well?   I don’t believe I have access to this, I have PowerBI but I don’t believe I have Excel Online
    7. When you press Windows + V, do you see the copied content in the clipboard history?

No, I copied new data into a spreadsheet.  Opened the Clipboard History, could see that data.  I then cleared the clipboard.  I modified a row of data that was pasted and copied the cell, opened the Clipboard History, and nothing was present.

    1. Were there any recent updates to Windows, Office, or other software around the time the issue began?   None that I am aware of.  Only those that were done post the issue to try to resolve it.

    Thanks
