    Hello Darko Bernard ****,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for your post. I understand that you are having issue with opening a .img file on Windows 11 Pro to install Office 2021. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you go through this situation.

To open a .img file on Windows 11 Pro

A .img file is a disk image file — essentially a virtual DVD. Windows 11 has built-in support for mounting .img files, so you don’t need any extra software.

    Steps:

    1. Locate the .img file you downloaded (e.g., Office2021.img).
    2. Right-click the file.
    3. Select Mount from the context menu.
      • This will create a virtual DVD drive in File Explorer.
      1. Open This PC in File Explorer — you’ll see a new drive (e.g., D: or E:) with the Office setup files.
      2. Open that drive and double-click setup.exe to start installing Office 2021.

When you’re done, you can right-click the virtual drive in File Explorer and select Eject to unmount it.

    About Office Online Server:

If you’re referring to Office Online Server (OOS) — that’s a separate server product for hosting Word/Excel/PowerPoint web apps on-premises. It also comes as an .img or .iso file, and you can mount it the same way as above to access the installer.

Hello Darko. I think the easiest way to open a .img file on Windows 11 Pro is using the native built-in mounting feature. .img files are disk image formats basically virtual DVDs Windows 11 has the ability to deal with them natively, without any third-party tools. You just have to locate the Office 2021 .img file in File Explorer, right-click it, and click Mount. This will create a virtual drive under This PC that will include the Office setup files. Open the virtual drive and double click on setup.exe to start the installation. Once you are finished, you can just right-click on the virtual drive and click Eject to unmount it.
