To open a .img file on Windows 11 Pro
A .img file is a disk image file — essentially a virtual DVD. Windows 11 has built-in support for mounting .img files, so you don’t need any extra software.
Steps:
- Locate the
.imgfile you downloaded (e.g.,Office2021.img). - Right-click the file.
- Select Mount from the context menu.
- This will create a virtual DVD drive in File Explorer.
- Open This PC in File Explorer — you’ll see a new drive (e.g.,
D:orE:) with the Office setup files. - Open that drive and double-click setup.exe to start installing Office 2021.
When you’re done, you can right-click the virtual drive in File Explorer and select Eject to unmount it.
About Office Online Server:
If you’re referring to Office Online Server (OOS) — that’s a separate server product for hosting Word/Excel/PowerPoint web apps on-premises. It also comes as an .img or .iso file, and you can mount it the same way as above to access the installer.
