Movies and TV - Purchases Suddenly Discontinued?

Hello,

I just received a message from my xbox that new purchases of the movies and TV from microsoft were being discontinued, with the caveat that existing purchases will can still be played (for how long though...). Low and behold, new purchases from the windows and TV app on windows cannot be made as of this morning (at least in Canada). I've been here before with Zune, Groove, and fun things from the Surface line, but still bitterly frustrated with microsoft.

I haven't been able to find any prior announcement or notice that TV/Movie store was being terminated from any major tech/microsoft news outlet or general web search. Was there anything from the company saying this was going to happen, or providing a modicum of detail? At present: There's no clarity on app availability or server support (which is far from a long-term given. See. music libraries and windows phone apps.)

I don't expect long term support here, odds are the servers hosting video content will be turned off in a year or two when microsoft thinks no one's looking (without the ability to just download our libraries like with groove/zune, given obtrusive DRM). But more than an xbox pop-up notification would be grand here.

Im honestly very disappointed at this change I dont want to go to these streaming platform to watch a fucking movie and furthermore spend money on a streaming platform just to watch a movie or two. Most of them doesn't even have the movie I want to watch I rather just buy the damn movie on the movies and tv. This really really upset me especially their was alot of movies that I wanted to buy and yet greedy Microsoft has to cash grab and hurt their customer. Im very disappointed in you Microsoft. Your going to see how badly it's going to impact yall.

I have 400K worth of Microsoft Rewards points. I spent years doing searches in Bing and quizzes and surveys and logging in every single day and playing games and doing quests. And in return, I used that money to buy movies from the storefront.

Now, I can watch those movies still. But as far as I can tell, there’s not a single app that I can buy movies with using money in my XBOX wallet? I can cash in my rewards points to put cash in that wallet, and if anyone happens to know if I’m wrong, please correct me.

Movies Anywhere doesn’t even show deals or let you buy on XBOX, but you can from their mobile app on iPad. Vudu/Fandango Now wants you to pay off site using a credit card or gift card (only from Vudu/FandangoNow of course). Prime etc. is all similar.

I have years of Game Pass Ultimate already stacked up. I’ve got roughly 800~1000 games in my library, so my backlog is massive. I have no need to buy games. I have no need to pay for GP Ultimate.

So what can I use my rewards points on in terms of buying movies on the XBOX using the funds in my wallet? I’d like to point out that one of the rewards is for a Microsoft Gift Card, which states “Blockbuster movies and TV shows” are available when cashing those in.

So maybe update your website so you’re not lying to us? And if you want us to keep our money in your ecosystem and not just get gift cards for other companies, maybe tell us what your replacement for the loss of movies & TV from your storefront is? Surely SOMEONE wants our money, right? You would think MS would want us to be able to pay for our streaming subscriptions from MS even. Would love to know if this is a thing.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this. You’re right as it seems that Microsoft made this change rather suddenly. As of July 18, Microsoft has ended its storefront for Windows and Xbox. This means it's no longer possible to purchase or rent movies and TV shows. From what I can see, the only notice available is the one posted on this page.

Here are some news articles regarding this:

Disclaimer: These are non-Microsoft sites. The content appears reliable, but stay cautious of ads. Always research products before downloading.

    Hello,

    That is correct.

Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. However, you can continue to access your purchased content in the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows device.
