How do I fix Error code: 0x800706f4 and Update/Internet connectivity issues?

Looking for some help!

I have an ASUS VivoBook laptop running Windows 11.

A few days ago an update download failed, laptop froze, and I had to do a “hard” shutdown.

When I restarted the laptop, Error code: 0x800706f4 appeared.

Since then, I have not been able to run anything related to Microsoft. When I try, I get a message saying I'm not connected to the Internet, when I am connected. Microsoft Edge works fine.

My Wi-Fi icon on the task bar is a “globe”. When I hover over it, it indicates I'm connected to my router (Secured), but “No Internet Access”. Again, I seem to have Internet access as Microsoft Edge works fine.

Wi-Fi troubleshooter indicates I am connected and online.

In settings “Home”, it indicates I am “Not connected – Offline”. Again, Microsoft Edge works fine.

In settings “Home”, Windows Update says, “Attention needed”. When I click on update, there are four updates listed, all with the following message: “We'll try to download this update once you're connected to the Internet”. There is a “Retry' button available. When I click on a retry button, I get the same message saying I'm offline. Again, I appear to be online as Microsoft Edge works fine.

Update troubleshooter will not run.

Things I've done:

Ran a malware scan (negative)

Restarted laptop (multiple times)

Rebooted modem

Rebooted Wi-Fi router

Forget and reconnect to the network

Reset network adapter

Reset network

Updated drivers (best are already installed)

Disabled firewall and antivirus to see if cause of problem (negative)

Ran DISM (at least one file repaired)

Ran System File Checker (negative)

Reset PC (kept personal files)

Other results:

System > Troubleshoot > You need to be connected to the Internet to see recommendations

System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Network and Internet > Run > Good news – you're connected “You're connected to the Internet. We didn't find any problems with your network.”

In Advanced network settings > Hardware and connection properties: Connectivity (Ipv4/IPv6): Disconnected

In Advanced network settings > Internet options > Connections > To set up an Internet connection, click Setup > Connect to the Internet > We did not detect any networking hardware

I am reluctant to do any registry editing. I don't have the skills.

Thank you in advance!!

Hi Tom,

You've mentioned that you tried Reset PC with the kept personal files option. Did the reset complete successfully or did you get any errors?

If the reset didn't complete successfully, please use the ISO and do a repair installation.

  1. Download Windows 11 Media Creation Tool (MCT) from this link: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2156295
  2. Run MCT and download the ISO it recommends for your system. Do not uncheck "Use the recommended options for this PC".
  3. Right-click on the downloaded ISO and choose "Mount." This assigns the ISO a drive letter.
  4. Run setup.exe from the ISO drive. This starts the in-place upgrade/repair installation.
  5. This starts the setup dialog. In the initial screen, click “Change how Setup downloads updates”
  6. Select “Not right now”, and continue the process.

(Your files, settings and applications will be preserved if you use the ISO recommended for your system by the Media Creation Tool.)

    Hi Tom,

I see. The local reinstall is not the preferred reset option, as it uses the existing OS files to reinstall Windows.

Please see if the repair installation method I posted earlier helps.

    (or)

Backup the data to an external drive and cleanly install Windows 11 using USB setup disk. The tutorials below can be helpful.
