Hello Microsoft Team,

I am planning to apply for virtual assistant jobs, and many clients require strong Microsoft Excel skills. I want to get officially certified by Microsoft to prove my Excel proficiency.

I am not sure whether to take the Excel Associate (MO-200 or MO-210) or the Excel Expert (MO-201 or MO-211) certification.

Here are a few details about me:

I have beginner to intermediate skills in Excel (e.g., formulas, tables, charts, and basic data organization).

I use Microsoft 365 (not Office 2019).

  • My goal is to increase my chances of getting hired as a virtual assistant or remote admin support.
  • I am also willing to study further if the Expert certification is more useful or recognised by employers. Thank you so much!

    Hi @mayra lozada

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

It's fantastic that you're looking to get certified in Excel to boost your virtual assistant career. This is a very smart move, as strong Excel skills are highly valued by clients.

Given your situation, beginner to intermediate Excel skills, using Microsoft 365, and aiming for virtual assistant/remote admin support roles and basing on my understanding I recommend Certification Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Associate (MO-210)

The Excel Associate (MO-210 for Microsoft 365) focuses on core Excel skills (formulas, tables, charts, data organization) essential for virtual assistant tasks. Since you have beginner to intermediate skills, this exam aligns perfectly, offering a solid foundation and proving your practical competency to employers. For most virtual assistant roles, these fundamental skills are more crucial than advanced Excel knowledge.

You can consider to take the Associate exam first to solidify your core Excel understanding. This builds confidence and provides a valuable credential quickly. The Excel Expert (MO-211) certification covers more advanced topics (macros, complex formulas, advanced charts). While valuable for long-term growth or specialized tasks, it might not be an immediate requirement for all virtual assistant roles.

Starting with the Associate certification provides immediate value for job applications. You can then pursue the Expert certification later if needed for career advancement or specific client demands.

Or if you're already very confident in your advanced Excel skills, you could consider taking the Expert (MO-211) exam directly. However, it's strongly recommended to have a deep, practical understanding to pass this more challenging exam.

Good luck with your studies and job search!
