How to install games to a different drive v.i.a MS Store?

I want to install Roblox onto my D:\ drive. Despite having my settings set to let the D:\ drive be the default drive, MS Store only allows installations for the C: drive. What steps am I missing?

Also, the D:\ drive is in exFAT format (its a hard drive, it came formatted from the factory)

Thanks in advance,

Aayushman

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

You're running into a file system compatibility issue. The Microsoft Store and many apps (including Roblox) require the target drive to be formatted as NTFS, not exFAT. This is because exFAT lacks support for certain Windows features that apps like Roblox rely on, such as permissions, symbolic links, and system-level integration.

To install apps on your D: drive, you'll need to format it. Make sure to back up any important data beforehand, as formatting will erase everything on the drive.

Here are the instructions:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Locate your D: drive under "This PC".
  3. Right-click on the D: drive and select "Format".
  4. In the Format window:
  • Set "File system" to "NTFS".
  • Leave "Allocation unit size" as "Default".
  • You can enter a name under "Volume label" if you want.
  • Check or uncheck "Quick Format" depending on your preference. (Quick Format is faster, but less thorough. However, it is sufficient for your case.)
  1. Click "Start".
  2. Confirm that you want to erase all data and proceed.
  3. Wait for the format to complete.
  4. Click "OK" when it's done and close the window.

Feel free to ask back any questions.

    UPDATE 2:

    Hey David,

I just realised that Roblox actually still installed to the C:\ drive, despite it being set to install on my D:\ drive.

I found out because despite the drive being unplugged, it still opened.

Any solution as to why it's happening? I have ALL of my settings set to install apps to my D:\ drive, to no avail.

    Thanks in advance,

    Aayushman
