I have the installation disk for microsoft works, but it won't run on my new computer. I have old files that I need it to run. How can I either get the program to install or convert to excel?

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Are you mainly looking to access the files, or do you need to use the full Microsoft Works program again?

Unfortunately, Microsoft Works was a discontinued productivity suite that included a word processor, spreadsheet, and other tools, but since it hasn’t been supported for years, it can have trouble running on newer systems like Windows 11.

Should you need further information please let me know.

I would recommend getting a file converter, but if you need immediate access, then something that I found that worked if you have a physical installer CD, you can still run it if you need to you can even set up a virtual machine to run it, but did not want to automatically install for me when I tried it so you might have to run the executable yourself Again. I would only do this in the short term until you can get a more long-term solution.

Thank you for letting me know.

Since your previous computer is no longer usable. Here are a couple of possible next steps you could consider:

    1. Using an older computer with Microsoft Works installed

If you happen to still have access to an older computer (or know someone who does) that already has Microsoft Works installed, you could try opening the .wdb file there and use the Save As option to export it as a .csv file. This format is generally easier to open in Excel.

    1. Looking into third-party conversion tools

Some people explore third-party file conversion tools online to convert .wdb files to .csv or .xls formats. If you decide to go that route, just make sure to take standard precautions, especially if the files contain any personal or sensitive information.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed or if you have any questions about the file types, I'm here to support you as best I can.

Thank you for letting me know.

That "file format not valid" message usually means the program you’re using doesn’t recognize the older Microsoft Works file format.

Just to confirm, do the files end in .wps, .wks, or maybe .xlr? That'll help me suggest the right tool or method to open them.

In the meantime, if it’s a .wps (word processor) file, you can try opening it using Microsoft Word:

    • Open Word.
    • Go to File > Open.
    • Choose Browse, then change the file type dropdown to "All Files (.)".
    • Select the file and open it.

If that doesn’t work, or if it’s a spreadsheet like .wks or .xlr we may need to use a file converter or a tool like LibreOffice, which sometimes handles older formats better.

Let me know how it goes.
