Protecting Cells in Excel

Would like to know the exact steps (each one) in how to protect (lock) the formulas in a spreadsheet but not the results. Again, only lock the formulas but not the results of the formulas. I spoke with two Microsoft individuals and they did not know how to do this. Somewhat surprising. I thought this is relatively simple and straightforward but I guess not.

Thank you for any help.

It is difficult to prevent this; it's best to educate users not to use the standard Paste (or Ctrl+V) but to use Paste Values (Ctrl+Shift+V) only.

    Hans

Thank you for the detailed answer.

    A related question.

How can I lock/protect/freeze a particular Font on a spreadsheet (1) such that if I paste data from another spreadsheet (2) which has a different Font, the end result on spreadsheet (1) will have data in the particular Font original set on spreadsheet (1)?

    Hope this is clear

    Step 1:

    • Select the cells that the user should be able to edit. Do not include any cell that contains a formula.
    • Press Ctrl+1 to activate the Format Cells dialog.
    • Activate the Protection tab.
    • Clear the Locked check box.
    • Click OK.

    Step 2:

    • Activate the Review tab of the ribbon.
    • In the Protect group, click Protect Sheet.
    • Use the check boxes to specify what users will be allowed to do.
    • At the very least, leave the check box 'Select unlocked cells' selected.
    • If you want to set a password that will be needed if you want to unprotect the sheet later on, enter it in the Password box. Do not forget it!
    • Click OK.
    • If you provided a password, you will have to enter it again as confirmation.
    • Save the workbook.

Users won't be able to edit the locked cells, including all cells with formulas.

Excel will still recalculate the formulas as needed, so the results of the formulas will change.
