Dear Brian Myers,
The behavior you're describing—where the external USB drive sleeps after just a few seconds of inactivity—is not typical and may be influenced by power management defaults in Windows 11, particularly on systems using Modern Standby. Some legacy drives may not respond well to these newer power models.
To help mitigate this, we recommend the following steps:
Device Manager Settings Open Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click on each USB Mass Storage Device, and select Properties. Under the Power Management tab, uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
Power Plan Adjustments Navigate to Control Panel > Power Options, select your active plan, and click Change advanced power settings. If available, expand Hard disk > Turn off hard disk after and set the value to 0 (Never). On some systems, this option may be hidden due to Modern Standby.
Third-Party Tools If built-in settings are limited, tools like NoSleepHD or KeepAliveHD can help keep the drive active by periodically writing small files to prevent sleep.
I hope this helps. Just kindly tick Accept Answer that others in the community facing similar issues can easily find the solution. Your contribution is highly appreciated.
Best regards,
