    Dear Leila,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Community. I understand you're experiencing an issue where Outlook is asking for your IMAP password, and you’re unsure what it is. I am happy to assist you with that.

Here is a clear approach to help you understand your options:

Step 1: Verify Your Email Password

    • Try signing in to your email account through the web (e.g., Outlook.com or your email provider’s website).
    • If you can’t sign in, reset your password using your provider’s recovery options.  For Outlook.com accounts, use: Recover your Microsoft account or reset your password

Step 2: Update the Password in Outlook

Once you confirm the correct password:

Step 3: If You Use Two-Step Verification

Some providers (like Microsoft, Google, Yahoo) require an app password for IMAP connections when two-step verification is enabled.

    Step 4: Check IMAP Settings

If the issue persists, verify your IMAP server settings:

Step 5: Repair Your Outlook Profile (If Needed)

If Outlook still prompts for the password:

I hope these steps help you resolve the problem. If you require additional guidance, feel free to reply to this thread and I’ll be happy to assist you. Hello Leila. When you see that IMAP password prompt, it typically means that your email app (such as Outlook or Windows Mail) is attempting to connect to your email server but is not able to verify authentication properly. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is the protocol that syncs your email across devices, and the password it is asking for is the same password you use to log into your email account (for example: Gmail, Yahoo, or your provider’s webmail). If you can't remember your password, try using a browser to log into your email account to verify your credentials. If you can't get in, you will probably have to reset your password using your provider's password recovery page.

Additionally, if your account is set up with two-factor authentication (2FA), you may need to create an app password through your email provider's security settings this is often the case with Gmail and Yahoo when using an application for the first time.

    Best regards,
