Hello Neeharika Nagarajan,
It's very frustrating when your computer says you don't have a camera even though you know it's built-in. This usually means the camera is either turned off by a setting or the driver that lets it communicate with Windows is not working correctly.
Here are some steps you can try, starting with the most common and easiest fixes.
- Check for a Physical Camera Switch or Key
Many laptops have a physical switch or a key on the keyboard to turn the camera off for privacy.
- Physical Switch: Look on the sides of your laptop for a small slider switch. It might be near the camera lens itself.
Function Key: Look at the top row of keys on your keyboard (the F-keys). One of them might have a camera icon on it (it often looks like a camera with a slash through it). You may need to press this key along with the Fn key to turn the camera on and off.
- Check Your Camera Privacy Settings
Windows has a master switch that can block all apps from using the camera.
Click the Start button and go to Settings (the gear icon).
Select Privacy & Security.
Scroll down and click on Camera.
Make sure that Camera access is turned On.
Also, check that Let apps access your camera is turned On.
- Check the Device Manager
This is where Windows lists all the hardware connected to your computer.
Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager from the menu.
In Device Manager, look for a category called Cameras or Imaging devices. Click the arrow to expand it.
If you see your camera listed (it might be called "Integrated Camera" or something similar):
Enable it: If it has a small down-arrow icon on it, right-click it and select Enable device.
**Update the driver:** Right-click the camera and select **Update driver**, then choose **Search automatically for drivers**.
If you **don't see** a "Cameras" category:
At the top of the Device Manager window, click **View** and then select **Show hidden devices**. See if the camera appears now.
If it still doesn't show up, click **Action** at the top and select **Scan for hardware changes**. This will make Windows look for any new hardware.
- Reinstall the Camera Driver
If updating the driver doesn't work, reinstalling it might fix the problem.
Go back to Device Manager and find your camera.
Right-click on it and select Uninstall device. Make sure to check the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device" if it appears.
After it's uninstalled, restart your computer. Windows will automatically try to find and reinstall the correct driver for your camera when it starts up.
If you follow these steps, it's very likely one of them will get your camera working again. The most common issues are the physical switch/key and the privacy settings.
I hope this helps you.
Best Regards,
Jerald Felix
