Hi there,

Limited tech know-how so hoping for some help from you guys :-)

The Problem:

Recently my laptop downloaded the 2024-08 update for w11 ver 24H2. It ran the install and rebooted, making it to 90% (approx from memory) before saying "something went wrong" and not to worry as it was reverting back (or similar wording).

I found afterwards that my USB Drives no Longer Work. Here's what shows under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers group in Device Manager (3 items):

  • Two USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller devices - Reporting error code 37 [ cannot initialise the driver,
  • A third controller NVIDIA USB Type-C Port Policy Controller - Reported as working correctly.

Attempted fixes:

  • Trying to reinstall the update - same result, fails near completion and saying undoing changes/reverting back.
  • Uninstalling the two xHCI drivers, then rebooting to reinstall. Unfortunately problem persists.

My system:

Predator Helios 300, Model PH315-52-74XZ

Thank you, and please, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this short of a full W11 reinstall?

Cheers

Update - Unfortunately I get this response having tried using both serial number or Model number, and also if I click on 'sign in' , 'sign up' or 'what's Acer ID' options. Note I also tried all this on their acer.com/au-en web page:

You don't have permission to access "http://www.acer.com/us-en/support/product-support/PH315-52" on this server.

    Reference #18.34a82d17.1757315679.254fd468

    https://errors.edgesuite.net/18.34a82d17.1757315679.254fd468

Further update, I was able to get to the menu, but Im not sure I'm seeing everything. All I can see are 3 Documents, and 8 Bios/firmware updates - of which the most recent is 2020, does that seem correct?

Thank you for all your help :-)

Go to the support page for your laptop on the Acers website, then from there, download and install the version of Chipset drivers they recommend and while there, if you do not have your drive encrypted with Bitlocker, check for any BIOS update that may need to be installed

    https://www.acer.com/us-en/support/product-support/PH315-52

If that does not resolve the problem, then the best option to undo any damage that may have been caused by that update, is to perform an in-place repair with the Windows 11 ISO.

Please ensure you download the ISO in the same language as you use for the Windows UI, follow the steps, this is then not like re-installing Windows, it is just like an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

    Click this link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

to download the Windows 11 ISO

When the ISO file completes downloading

    Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the Install option.

Very Important - ensure you select the option to keep your files and apps.

See Acer support to update both drivers & Bios, then reset win update settings to defaults, is NOT " Get latest"

Win11 by default only installs critical security updates, unless you made the mistake of selecting “Get latest updates” which includes drivers.

See your laptop/PC makers support to update both bios and makers drivers.

There should be a shortcut to that makers update utility on your system.

Then set Bios to defaults & Pwr to balanced. At the end of the day shutdown, do not leave in sleep.

Do NOT update from any other source inc Device Manager

You only need to set the Advanced options for notify & Time, then leave win update to do its own thing.
