What is the difference between Azure Site Recovery for customer-owned sites and Azure Site Recovery to Azure?

Is there an egress charge while failing back from on-premises to Azure and during reprotection?

    Azure Site Recovery supports replication and failover either between two customer owned sites, i.e. on premises or private cloud or else in the second and more common scenario you would use Azure itself as the replication and failover target.

    There would indeed be egress charges incurred for any replication charges of data leaving Azure so in the case of failback, there would be some costs incurred here.

    Here’s how Azure Site Recovery works differently for customer-owned sites compared to Azure.

    Azure Site Recovery for customer-owned sites (

    • You can replicate your on-premises servers/VMs to another customer-owned site and you are responsible for maintaining the disaster recovery infrastructure, including hardware, storage, and networking.
    • After the 31-day free trial, the service costs approximately USD 16 per instance per month. This option is ideal if you already have a secondary site and want ASR to manage failover and failback processes.

    Azure Site Recovery to Azure (S2A)

    • Your on-premises servers or VMs are copied directly into Azure’s cloud. The replicated VMs/servers are stored directly in Microsoft Azure, with Azure providing the disaster recovery infrastructure no need to maintain your own secondary data center.
    • After the 31-day free trial, the service costs approximately USD 25 per instance per month. This option is best if you prefer a cloud-based disaster recovery solution without managing physical hardware.

    • As Alan Kinane mentioned ASR incur egress charges when failing back
    • When you fail back your replicated VMs from Azure to your on-premises site, egress (data transfer out of Azure) charges do apply because data is leaving the Azure data center.
    • Azure compresses the replicated data before transfer, which reduces the amount of data and helps lower costs
    • Reprotection is when you set up replication back to Azure after failing back to on-premises.
    • Ingress (data coming into Azure) is free, so no egress charges occur during reprotection to Azure.
