Windows 11 Media Player wont work is asking for HEVC Video extensions

For some reason my Windows Media Player will not work on my laptop. It is now asking me to purchase HEVC Extensions. It does not appear to be a problem with the actual files, as they work on other devices.

How can I fix this asap for free?

    Hi,

Nice to meet you! My name is Randy and I'm an independent advisor.

What’s happening is that Windows 11 Media Player doesn’t include the built-in codecs for HEVC (the format many modern phones and cameras use for video), so Microsoft sells the "HEVC Video Extensions" separately for about a dollar in the Store.

    Kind regards,
