I created Azure free subscription account with my credit card and it showed me the USD 200 credit balance. But since I was already added as member in another organization account the default directory showed that organization and the subscription was also listed there. So i left the tenant signed out. After signing back in I got default directory switched to my organization but it wont show the free subscription now. how do i fix this

Hello DHANASHRI BAPAT, your subscription isn’t gone it’s just still tied to the Azure Active Directory tenant where you first created it. When you left that organization’s directory, you also lost the permissions to view or manage the subscription. The $200 credit and subscription are safe, just currently hidden under that original tenant.

Steps to recover it:

  1. In the Azure portal, click your profile picture (top-right) → Switch directory.
  2. Look for the directory where the subscription was first created and switch to it.
  3. If that directory isn’t listed, your account was removed from the tenant. In that case:
    • Contact an admin from that tenant to re-add your account or transfer the subscription to your personal directory.
    • Instructions for the admin: Transfer Azure subscription ownership.
  4. If you used your personal credit card to create it, you’re still the billing owner. If tenant admins can’t reassign it, open a free Azure Billing Support request.

(Credit to Alex Burlachenko Thank you for the initial explanation on this scenariothis is a common when switching tenants.)

Documentation:

Your subscription hasn’t vanished it’s just hiding under the directory where it was born. Switching back or requesting a transfer should get you back on track.
I hope the above information helps. Thank you!

    Hi,

you did everything right by leaving the other tenant, but now your subscription seems to have vanished. do not worry, it is not gone. it is just hiding in a different directory.

your free subscription is still tied to that original organization's azure active directory tenant. when you left, you lost access to it because your user account is no longer in that tenant. the subscription itself, and your $200 credit, are still there.

you need to switch back to that original directory. look in the top right corner of the azure portal. click on your account avatar. you will see a list of all the directories you have access to. switch back to the organization's directory you just left. your subscription should be right there.

if you cannot see the directory in the list anymore, it means you were completely removed as a user. in that case, you need to contact someone who is still an admin in that organization's tenant. they can go to the 'cost management + billing' section, find your subscription, and transfer the billing ownership to your personal account.

the steps for an admin to transfer a subscription are here https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/cost-management-billing/manage/billing-subscription-transfer

if you created the subscription with your personal credit card, you are the billing owner. an admin in that tenant should still be able to see it and reassign it to you. this might help in other ownership scenarios too.

when creating a new subscription, always make sure you are in your own default directory first. you can check this by clicking your avatar in the portal before you start the sign up process.

if all else fails, you can contact azure billing support. they can help locate the subscription and facilitate the transfer, especially since your payment method is attached to it.

your subscription is safe, it is just a matter of accessing the right directory. let me know if switching back works.

    Best regards,

    Alex
