Hi everyone,

I need to reinstall Windows 10 on an used PC, and I'm looking for the official way to download the Windows 10 installation media. I've heard about the Microsoft website offering it, but I want to make sure I'm getting it from a safe and legitimate source.

Could someone point me to the correct page or guide me through the process? Also, is there anything I should be careful about when downloading or using the ISO (like activation keys, etc.)?

Yes, downloading Windows 10 installation media directly from the official Microsoft website is safe and legitimate. Microsoft provides the Media Creation Tool or official ISO files through their website, ensuring that you receive genuine, unaltered software.

About using the ISO (like activation keys)

    • You need a valid Windows 10 product key to activate Windows after installation unless your device already has a digital license linked to your account or hardware.
    • If you're reinstalling on a device that was previously activated with Windows 10, it may activate automatically via digital license.

    ISO Verification:

    • Check the checksum (MD5/SHA-256) provided by Microsoft to verify the integrity of the ISO file.
    • This helps ensure the file hasn't been tampered with or corrupted during download.

Step-by-Step Guide to Downloading Windows 10 Installation Media:

1.Go to the Official Page: Navigate to the link above using your web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.).

2.Select Your Version: Under the "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)" section, use the drop-down menu to select "Windows 11". Do not select the multi-edition version unless you have a specific reason. Click "Download."

3.Select Product Language: On the next screen, choose your language (e.g., English). Click "Confirm."

4.Get the ISO: Finally, click the "64-bit Download" link. The ISO file (several gigabytes in size) will begin downloading to your computer.

If you already have a Windows 10 license, sometimes you can reinstall or repair Windows using the existing license without re-downloading the ISO, but this isn’t a method for fresh installs on a new device. Stick to official Microsoft resources for peace of mind and security. If you’re concerned about access or licensing, Microsoft also offers free upgrades for eligible devices, and in some cases, you can activate Windows 10 without a product key using digital licenses.

On Microsoft's official Windows 10 download page, click "Download tool now" under the "Create/ Download Windows 10 installation media" section. This tool will help you create a bootable USB drive or DVD. After downloading, run the tool. It will ask for permission; accept and follow the prompts. Choose "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC".

You can usually leave these as default, or customize them if needed. You can select USB flash drive (at least 8GB) or ISO file. If you choose ISO, you can burn it to a DVD later or create a bootable USB using tools. Once you have the installation media, you can boot from it to reinstall Windows 10.

Below is the official link on the Microsoft website to download the Media Creation Tool which you can use to automatically create a bootable Windows 10 USB on an empty USB flash drive (minimum 8GB).

With regards to activation, it depends on where you got your Windows licence, if Windows 10 came pre-installed on your PC by the PC manufacturer, then there is an OEM licence stored on the motherboard and Windows 10 would activate automatically after it is installed, if your PC came with Windows 7 or 8 installed and you are upgrading to Windows 10 for the first time, you would need to purchase a new Windows 10 licence.
