Hi. We have multiple students on our facilty where students are given an assignment and have for instance a week to complete the task. They are then going to upload the file to our LMS. Is there a way to check for how long the student have edited the document? In our opinion the edit time that can be viewed in properties for the doucment in word gets reset when the students upload the same document to OneDrive. Does Microsoft have a reliable way to check for edit time of documents? And how is this done if so?

The editing time statistic maintained by Word is virtually meaningless and useless for this purpose.

It has no forensic value, at all.

    1. If Save As is used to rename a document or to save it to a different location, the editing time is reset to 0.
    2. This statistic will tell you how long a document has been open for editing on the computer. It does not track actual viewing or screen time. For instance it will count the time it is open while the student is playing a video game, sleeping, or absent from the room.

You can find the editing time on a document in multiple ways. For Word on Windows, click the File Menu > Info tab in Backstage. Under the Properties column, it will list the “Total Editing Time.” In my document below, it shows 682 minutes. Another location is the Properties box of the file
