I am trying add my dell laptop to my microsoft account but keep getting this message "We didn't recognize this serial number". The laptop was there before but I had to wipe my drive and reinstall it.

You can only add Microsoft devices or accessories, such as Surface laptops and Xbox controllers, by using the serial number directly in the Microsoft Devices section online.

If your Dell laptop is no longer recognized after reinstalling Windows, could you please tell me if you've set up the device using a local account or a Microsoft account?

Make sure you've signed in with your Microsoft account on the device. If the device is still not registered here, https://account.microsoft.com/devices, you can follow the provided steps.

To switch your Microsoft account to a local account:

• Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info.
• Select 'Sign in with a Local account instead.'
• Follow the prompts to change your account to a local account.
• Sign out and then sign in with your local user account.

Next, switch your local account back to a Microsoft account:

• Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info.
• Select 'Sign in with your Microsoft account instead.'
• Sign in with your Microsoft account.
• Check if your device appears in your Microsoft account device list at Settings > Accounts > Linked Devices.

You can also download an app from the Microsoft Store that will add your device to your Microsoft account's device list.

If you are still having issues you can try renaming your device and see if it helps., go to Start > Settings > System > About > click "Rename this PC" and give your PC a new name.

On Windows 11, go to Settings > Accounts > Linked Devices.

Could you please confirm if your Dell laptop is visible here.

After signing in with your Microsoft account on a new device or after reinstalling Windows, it may take 24–48 hours for the device to appear in your Microsoft account device list. In some cases, it may take a little longer than expected.

If your device is still not registered, please follow the steps I shared earlier.

First try switching your account from Microsoft account to Local account. And then back to Microsoft account. This will add your device to your Microsoft account.

Settings > Accounts > Linked Devices.

The app I mentioned will count as one of the device count lists in your Microsoft account. You can download any app or game from the Microsoft Store simply by signing in with your Microsoft account on store.
