Unable to update Roblox in S Mode

My children play Roblox on their laptops. The app needs to be updated, but we have been notified by Microsoft that we are unable to do so in S Mode. Once we unlock S Mode, my children will have less protection and will no longer be as safe online. How is it possible that an app used predominantly by children is no longer available in S Mode?

    Dear SusieC,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A.

It seems Roblox has changed how it delivers updates, making its main application incompatible with the strict security rules of S Mode.

You are correct that switching out of S Mode is a one-way street and reduces some of the built-in protection. However, you can still maintain a very high level of security by taking the right steps.

    • On the laptop, go to Settings > System > Activation.
    • Find the section to "Switch to Windows 11/10 Home" or "Switch to Windows 11/10 Pro".
    • Click the "Go to the Store" link. You will be redirected to a special page in the Microsoft Store.
    • Click the "Get" button on that page. This will permanently switch the device out of S Mode.

After Switching, Immediately Do This to Stay Safe:

    • Use a Standard User Account for Your Children: Do NOT give your children an administrator account. Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users and set them up with a Standard User account. This is the single most important step. A standard account prevents them from installing most unauthorized software without your administrator password.
    • Configure Microsoft Family Safety: This is a powerful tool. You can set up screen time limits, content filters for websites, and require your approval for app and game purchases. This gives you much of the control you had in S Mode.
    • Ensure that the built-in Windows Security (antivirus) is running and up to date. It is a robust security suite that provides excellent protection.
    • Teach your children about online safety, such as not downloading unknown programs, avoiding suspicious links, and not giving out personal information.
