Unable to download SQL server management studio 19.0.2 on windows 11

So what actually happens? Do you get an error message?

You say you cannot download, but then you talk about uninstall. How can you uninstall something you cannot download?

Hi Erland, thanks for your response. Sorry, I mean I can download and have problem during the installation. After the installation done, SSMS doesn't show up automatically and I have to search on the apps list (screenshot A)Screenshot A.png. I click SQL SMS19 (screenshot B)Screenshot B.png. I click on Database Engine, choose one of them (screenshot C)Screenshot C.png. At the end Screenshot D.png. I did try click these (ANS1 SQLEXPRESS, 1,2,3) and the result still the same like on screenshot D. On screenshot D it said a connection succesfully establish with the server but have a problem with the certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted. What does it mean? The installation for SQL server and SSMS 19 are suppose to be easy right? just follow the instructions? or is that how it usually? After using mac for ages and decided back to windows to learn SQL, It's kind of frustrated though. Thanks.

I click SSMS19 and I have to browse to find a server name (screenshot B).

I try and click on Database engine ANS1\SQLEXPRESS, or 1,2,3 (screenshotC)

It result is the same like on the screenshot D.

It is a little odd so far that with a default installation of SSMS you are not supposed to get that error. Yet. That is, Microsoft have made changes to all their client APIs to require an encrypted connection by a trusted certificate by default. This change has propagated to Azure Data Studio, but not to yet to SSMS, but it will come.

Yes, it is supposed to be simple , but "simple" and "security" does not always walk hand in hand. Say that you connect to a server with sensitive data. What could happen is that someone tricks the network so that when you think that you connect to SQL Server, you connect to the attacker's SQL-Server-lookalike which sends your queries further to SQL Server, and returns the data - but also logs the statements and data to the attacker's own data store. This is known as a man-in-the-middle attack. If you have a certificate which you have gotten from a trustworthy source, for instance your DBA, you can install it your trusted certificate store, the attack will not work, because connection will fail when you don't trust the certificate.

On the other hand, checking Trust Server Certificate means "I trust the man-in-the-middle".

Of course, in many situations this man-in-the-middle is completely hypothetic. For instance in the trivial case when you run SQL Server and SSMS on the same machine. Or you work in a test environment with no real data. You may say "I'm in a corporate environment and we are all behind firewall". No no, the man-in-the-middle can be someone from within, for instance a network guy that work extra as a data thief.

Hi Erland, For a newbie SQL like me it's quite confusing. I thought I already have followed the instructions. I have no idea that I have to go to connection properties to click trust server certificate and Encrypt connection. Again, thank you Erland.
