If Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows 11 version 23H2, why hasn't Microsoft made it possible to upgrade to Windows 24H2 through Windows update?

Microsoft has announced that it is discontinuing support for Windows 11 version 23H2 next month (in November 2025). It will only be supporting Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 from now on. However, Microsoft has not made it possible to do the upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2 through the Windows Update feature in Settings. I have seen the thread on this site about doing the upgrade. All of the proposed solutions involve downloading third-party software, and running the third party software through a series of commands via Command Prompt. Multiple users have tried these solutions and found that they have failed. Why hasn't Microsoft made it possible to upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2 via Windows Update? If Microsoft is discontinuing support for one of its own operating systems, it ought to be providing an easier path to upgrade to a supported version without having to go through a convoluted and often unsuccessful process involving third-party software and command prompts.

    Hi Peter,

Microsoft has indeed announced the end of support for version 23H2, effective November 2025. However, the upgrade to 24H2 is currently being deployed in a phased rollout, which means it is not yet available to all devices via Windows Update. This approach allows Microsoft to monitor performance and compatibility issues before making the update broadly available. Some devices that were compatible with 23H2 may not meet the criteria for 24H2, and Microsoft may apply safeguard holds to prevent potential issues during the upgrade.

Windows 11 version 24H2 is the next major update and will be followed by 25H2. These versions are built on a new platform that supports upcoming features like.

    • AI-powered Copilot enhancements
    • Improved energy efficiency
    • Better support for modern hardware
