For goodness sake! Stop restarting my PC while I have multi day scripts running! I have been working on some tasks that have taken me a few days and Microsoft decicded to maliciously shutdown my PC, WHILE I WAS USING IT.

This is malicious behaviour equivalent of malware.

I dont want to set 'active hours'.
I dont want the update to restart my pc automatically.
Just stop thinking you have some kind of higher than thou authority over peoples private systems.

This is the equivalent of cyber crime, maliciously accessing my PC and instructing it to perform an activity not authorised.

I completely agree. This has always been a common issue with Windows Update, so I don’t blame people for turning to third-party tools. Hopefully, applying those policies will stop any future automatic restarts. If you're still worried, this app might help you to have more control over your Windows updates.

I agree with that, but it’s unusual that it still restarted automatically even with those options set. When the update notification appeared, did you have the choice to postpone, or did it just restart by itself?

To make sure it won't happen again, you can apply this policy so your device will not restart automatically due to an update when a user is still signed in.

    • Click Start, type CMD
    • Right-click and Run as administrator
    • Enter or paste this command: reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    • This policy will ensure automatic restart will not occur during active hours: reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v AUOptions /t REG_DWORD /d 4 /f

    Hi,

Sorry that you ran into this problem. You should check the settings shown below and make sure they match. Get me up to date should be disabled because it is what's causing this automatic restart, while the other option should be enabled to alert you when a restart is required. I had the same problem before, and after changing these settings, I haven’t had any automatic restarts since.
