The preview pane of my file explorer now gives me the message: the file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer..." Up until yesterday, Oct 15, the preview pane worked with all documents and images. Yesterday there was a Windows 11 update. Since then, my preview pane no longer works. Have tried all of the fixes that appear when google searching this problem.

    Hi Russel,

I know how annoying this is, Microsoft recently tightened security around file previews to help reduce the risk of malware from shared or downloaded files. While this change improves safety, it’s unfortunately disrupted workflows for many users. If available, you can try unblocking the files manually by right-clicking the file, selecting Properties, and checking the “Unblock” box if it appears. That might restore preview functionality.

Other users have had success by rolling back the recent Windows update, which temporarily restores the preview pane.

Or you can Use Third-Party Preview Tools like QuickLook and PowerToys.

    Disclaimer:

These tools are developed and maintained by third parties (or in the case of PowerToys, by Microsoft but outside the core Windows team). While they are generally safe and widely used, compatibility may vary depending on your system configuration, security policies, and recent Windows updates. Always download from official sources and review permissions before installing.
