How to swap a photo for a different photo (keeping the formatting) in Word for iOS on an iPad?

I write field reports for work. To keep things simple I use the field report from the day before and then just edit the info for the current day. On the Windows desktop version of Word i can simply click a photo and change the photo to a new photo keeping all of the formatting, including alignment, sizing, spacing, etc. Is there a way to do this in the iOS version on my iPad. When I click on the picture I see the “Picture” menu tab pop up and I click that. However, there doesn’t appear to be an option for “Change Photo” like there is in Windows. Has anyone figured out how to do this? I tired insert, but that just drops a new photo in without all of the formatting.

This workaround can help you achieve nearly the same result:

(be sure you're running iOS 26 and Word version 2.102.3)

    1. In your document, tap the existing image once to select it.
    2. Tap Copy (from the toolbar or the context menu).
    3. Tap Paste this duplicates the image in the same size and position.
    4. Tap the new image > tap Replace (this option sometimes appears when you tap the small photo icon above the keyboard).

    Hi Scott,

    Thank you for reaching out!

My name is Stefano and it’s my pleasure to assist you today.

The Windows desktop version of Word has a very handy "Change Picture" option that replaces the image in place, preserving size, alignment, and formatting.

Unfortunately, the iOS versions of Word currently does not include that “Change Picture” feature. When you tap an image and go to the Picture tab, the options are limited to adjustments like crop, style, or effects, but not replacement.

I encourage you to leave a feedback that will be shared with Microsoft engineers for future implementations.

Tap the three dots located on the top right menu bar > tap Help and Feedback > Suggest a feature
