Too many login attempts

So, I've had my email for years, like over a decade, and not until Outlook started this overhaul did I have this issue. Every so often upon signing in I am prompted to sign in using a temporary passcode sent to my alternate email. I know my password by heart so I don't feel the need to go this roundabout avenue. Recently, though Outlook has been giving me this "due to too many failed attempts" when I've only entered my correct password once.

This happened a year or so ago and someone (from Microsoft) on their Twitter/X actually assisted me in getting it sorted out (via private messages). Now it's doing it again but their social media is not helpful at all. Tried Chatting with "Francisco" and all he did was regurgitate that signing with the wrong password will prompt lockouts. He tells me this three times despite me informing him that I'm using my correct password on and it tells me this on the first try. He then just leaves the chat.

I even changed my password and it still did it. I have had the same device, router, etc for years. Am I just not seeing the solution right in front of me? This is very frustrating. Someone from Microsoft needs to see to these issues and fix them once and for all. Stop laying the blame on the users. I shouldn't have to use any other means besides my password. And Support should actually try to help and not just pass the buck. What can I do to correct this since MS Support is not helpful.

Hi Michael, it sounds like Outlook is misflagging your login attempts possibly due to cached credentials or sync conflicts. Try clearing saved credentials from Windows Credential Manager, switching browsers, and enabling 2FA via Microsoft Authenticator to bypass the passcode prompts. Also, check if your Chromebook’s sync settings are interfering with Outlook.

If it still fails, submit a formal support ticket with screenshots.

also, when the error occurs, are you logging in via the Outlook app, a browser, or both and does it happen consistently across all devices or just one?

I hope this helps you out, let me know how it goes.

Hi Michael, thanks for posting here in Microsoft community, it sounds like Outlook’s security system may be misidentifying your login attempts as suspicious, possibly due to cached credentials or sync issues.

Try these steps, first, Clear browser cookies/cache or use a different browser simply Remove saved credentials from Windows Credential Manager then Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) via Microsoft Authenticator to bypass temporary passcodes.

Also, check for any Outlook app/device sync issues that might be triggering false login attempts.

If the issue persists, consider submitting a formal support ticket with detailed logs/screenshots.

Also, are you accessing Outlook through a browser, desktop app, or mobile device when this error occurs and does it happen across all platforms or just one?

I hope this helps you out, let me know how it goes.

    Chard
