Touchpad stopped working with Windows 11 update; driver reinstall didn't fix

I updated to Windows 11 a few days ago. The touchpad has stopped working. I've tried:

Updating the driver
Reinstalling the driver
Checking it's On in settings, as well as turning off and back on again
Checking it's On per my F8 key
Disabling the touchpad, then re-enabling it
Rebooting several times after the above actions

The touchpad was working perfectly fine before the update. Can anyone help me resolve this? I also looked at this article, by Arya, which is a good article. (https://www.kapilarya.com/fix-touchpad-not-working-in-windows-11-10) None of this solves my problem. I am able to use a wireless USB mouse, but when I take the USB out, the touchpad will not work. Why is it with modern windows NOTHING EVER WORKS AND UPDATES MESS EVERYTHING UP. Literally just do windows XP, with malware and other virus updates and guess what? we're good. It was the only good windows OS ever made. Also maybe stop hiring foreigners from unsubstantiated and unaccredited degree mills or I'm just going to stop using your software altogether. Idk if you know this, but bad workers make for bad work. LITERALLY ALL THE SOFTWARE YOU EVER NEEDED WAS XP.

Typically, on Lenovo and similar devices, Touchpad functionality is not managed directly through Windows. There's usually a keyboard shortcut to disable and re-enable the Touchpad, or it's done via an application provided by the manufacturer.

Look between the F1 - F12 keys for a key with a Touchpad symbol (sometimes it has a line through the symbol). If you find it, press the "Fn" key + <key with Touchpad symbol> and see if it will be disabled. To re-enable the Touchpad, press the shortcut keys again.

Yep, I checked that. That's what I meant by: "Checking it's On per my F8 key". I probably could have written that more clearly.

Pressing Fn + F8 didn't do anything that I could tell. Pressing only F8 does turn the touchpad off and show a transparent icon on screen with a bar through it. Pressing it again turns it back on with a transparent icon without the bar.

In this case, I think it's a good idea to try a Clean Boot. This can help identify the service (some may be only in the background or not so obvious to find) that is causing this behavior.

Perform a clean boot as instructed in the article below. Follow the instructions carefully.

If the problem does not occur after a clean boot. In this same article, there is a technique to help you identify which program is causing this in "How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot".

If you can identify the program that is causing this, uninstall it.

After finding the cause, or if it does not help, return to normal boot as instructed in "Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting".

Hi, I tried the cleanboot and the issue persisted, even with all the non-MS processes stopped. I assume this means that it wasn't an app causing this problem.Just for kicks and grins, I enabled half the processes, rebooted, then enabled the other half, etc. Under no circumstances would the touchpad work unless the checkbox (below) was checked.

I did notice, while doing this, that there was a process Musehub that kept showing up enabled, even though I had disabled it and it was turned off upon startup. So I uninstalled it. No change.

The touchpad simply won't work, with or without a mouse plugged in, unless this checkbox is on.

The Touchpad disabling when only F8 is pressed doesn't seem to be the standard behavior of this device. The Fn key is probably locked.

Try pressing "Fn + Esc" (This is usually the shortcut on Lenovo devices) to disable the Fn key lock and see if pressing "Fn + F8" then disables or re-enables the Touchpad.

Fn + Esc didn't appear to do anything. Pressing F8 alone still toggles. All of the function keys work when pressed without Fn. I see what you're saying.

The Fn key isn't stuck - it bounces freely up and down when pressed.

Fn Lock is a logical, not a physical, setting. Therefore, with Fn Lock enabled, the key will not be physically locked, only logically.

Do you have Lenovo Vantage installed? If yes, check the app settings. There should be something like "Keyboard top-row function". Feel free to share a screenshot if you can't find it.

If you don't have Lenovo Vantage installed, check your laptop's BIOS. If I'm not mistaken, the option is called "Hotkey Mode".

Yes, in Lenovo Advantage there is a Function Lock option. It was off. I turned it on, and now I must press Fn in order to access the special functions of the F keys.

This doesn't change the situation. Now that the Fn key is required, were you thinking something else might affect touchpad activation? I tried plugging and unplugging the USB mouse with and without the 'disable touchpad with mouse' option again and nothing has changed.

The option to disable the touchpad while using a mouse appears to disable the touchpad in all situations, with or without the mouse. Strange.

On some devices, the Touchpad settings in Windows rely on manufacturer-specific drivers or companion apps to work correctly. If those components are missing or misbehaving, the settings might not work as expected.

It's possible that another software, even Lenovo Vantage itself, could be interfering.

Do you happen to remember if Lenovo Vantage was already installed before this issue began?

Do you know if you have any other software installed on your system that manages Touchpad settings?

Yes, Lenovo Advantage has been installed for years. I didn't notice if it got updated when I updated to Windows 11. I do remember receiving several Lenovo updates while updating to Windows 11 and all its subsequent updates.

Should I uninstall LA and see if that fixes the issue? I'm assuming I can reinstall it later if I need it.

Your other question is hard to answer. I can't think of anything. But I looked through the apps and here are remote possibilities. Any thoughts?

Lenovo Hotkeys - haven't seen this before and don't know when it was installed. Appears to be a non-interactive list and 2 settings.

Lenovo Pen Settings - also new/unknown to me. Pen setting and a radial menu - nothing mentioning touchpad or mouse.

Maybe various game systems e e.g. Steam, Xbox

It could be a case of conflict between these softwares.

Do this: Uninstall one of them, restart your PC, and see how it behaves. If the problem persists, uninstall another one and repeat the process.

Leave Lenovo Vantage for last.

I uninstalled several game related systems and all the Lenovo stuff, one at a time, rebooting and checking again. No change in touchpad behavior.

I have a workaround - leave the "touchpad on while using a mouse" setting on, and then the touchpad will work with or without a mouse. Odd that it won't work without this setting turned on anymore, when that used to work just fine with Win 10.

If you have more suggestions, let me know. I may not be able to test much until Friday afternoon due to my schedule today and tomorrow. But I appreciate your help! That's very kind of you.

When you reinstalled the driver, did you let Windows install it automatically, or did you use an installer to install it manually?

If you used an installer, where did you download it from?

(The Yoga 6 has multiple variants. I need to know which exact variant your laptop is.)

Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Maximize the window and use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Hi David,

I let Windows update the driver automatically.

After I made the above post, I also went to Lenovo dot com and used their utility to check, and all drivers were up to date according to them.

I also went into the BIOS but could not find anything mentioning the touchpad or mouse.

Attached is the Yoga 6 info. On the back, it reads as a Yoga 6 13ARE05.

I also went back through the settings again. I changing the "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected" option from off to on. This time, when I removed the USB mouse, the touchpad continued to work. So I have a workaround. Now, the touchpad works with a mouse and without - but there is no way to turn the touchpad off while a mouse is connected. It's relatively hard to type on this laptop keyboard without touching the touchpad.
