I can’t add a device for my child in Family Safety

I purchased Minecraft for my son, but after installing, the multiplayer feature was blocked, likely due to some parental control settings. So I signed into Microsoft Family Safety, and selected his profile, but there were no devices added. I followed the instructions to add a new Windows device, but the option to select his profile under Accounts>Family was blocked.

How do I add a device so I can allow him to use multiplayer features in Minecraft?

    This doesn't work.

When I sign to my account, none of my children's accounts are listed. When I try to add my son's account, I get an error message (probably because it already exists).

If I sign in to my son's account, he's listed as Administrator, with no option to change it. My own account is also listed under his account as Organizer, with login option disabled.

If I go into my Family Safety settings, I can see my own account and my children's accounts. It looks correct, except no device is listed for my son's account, and I can't add any.

Occasionally there's a warning that his account is set up as Administrator which should be fixed, but when I attempt to follow the steps to fix it, I run into the same trouble as described above.

How do I change his account from Administratior to user (child)?

Hello Jeppe Bech, thanks for posting this in our community.

To add your child's device in Microsoft Family Safety which is currently preventing multiplayer access in Minecraft you'll first want to make sure your child's account is correctly set up as a Microsoft child account. You can check this by visiting https://account.microsoft.com/family and confirming that their profile appears under "Your Family" as a child. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to invite them again using their Microsoft email and have them accept the invitation.

Next, sign in to the Windows device your child uses. Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users. Make sure you're signed in as the parent (organizer) to add a family member. Choose "Add a family member," select "Child," and enter their Microsoft account email. Once added, sign out and let your child sign in using their own account. This step helps link the device to their Microsoft profile.

After signing in, the device should automatically register under their account. You can verify this by going to https://account.microsoft.com/devices while signed in as your child.

Also, keep in mind that Minecraft multiplayer requires Xbox Live permission, even on PC. You may need to adjust Xbox privacy settings to allow multiplayer access.

    Kind regards,

    John Oli
