Unexpected kernel mode trap (0x7f) After Waking Screen up from timeout

I have been having this persistent crash almost every time my PC turns off it's screen, then when I "wake it up" the screen locks up, then restarts with a black screen UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (0x7F) then restarts automatically.

It has also happened once when watching youtube and once while starting VR (Virtual Desktop). But it has happened EVERY time my PC's screen goes to sleep. I was thinking it might have something to do with my VR headset, but I turned off some programs and it still seems to be doing it.

I have so far:

Checked the Ram with Windows Diagnostic Tool (no problems)

Ran SFC/ Scannow (it repaired things but didn't help)

Ran DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (it repaired things but didn't help)

Windows is up to date

My Graphics Card is updated

I'm not the best with computers so I tried to provide the Event Viewer errors but there seems to be a lot of errors, I used to think it was OVRServiceLauncher but I since turned that off. Above are my PC Specs as well. Any help is appreciated and let me know if more information is needed!

The last resort would be re-installing Windows 11 with windows 11 installation assistant but I'd rather not if I can fix it another way. Cheers!

I am also having this issue an a fairly new AM5 build and I'm starting to think it's a driver issue related to 25.10.2. I notice my critical crashes started happening regularly on 10/31/2025 which is when I updated my AMD driver (9070 XT). I have ran system file checker and memtest with no issues. I also did a full uninstall on the current driver via AMD cleanup utility and re-installed but the issue persisted.

Basicallly whenevere I wake my monitors (not even necessarily from sleep) my computer crashes and mini dump files generated also point to amdkmdag.sys.

I think my next plan is to roll back to the previous driver and go from there.

Sorry for the delay in reply. I've been offline.

This minidump also mentions the AMD graphics driver as a cause of the crash.

In this case, I have 2 suspicions about the cause of this problem.

    1. A severe corruption of Windows.
    2. A hardware problem.

It is possible to test some hardware components using software, but unfortunately, not all of them.

I suggest you use the free MemTest86 tool for a deep check of your RAM.

(MemTest86 is capable of detecting memory issues that the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool might miss, so I believe it's a smart choice to use it for a more thorough analysis.)

    https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

The deep scan can take a long time, depending on how much RAM you have. So do it at a time that suits you.

Feel free to share a photo of the test result.

Also, check the "health" of your HD/SSD using Crystal Disk Info.

    https://crystalmark.info/en/download/#CrystalDiskInfo

(On this same page, there is the download of another app. The "Crystal Disk Mark". Do not download Crystal Disk Mark. Download only the "Crystal Disk Info".)

Download the "Standard Edition" by clicking on the "ZIP (XP-)" button.

Extract the ZIP and run the file "DiskInfo64.exe".

The health result of your HD/SSD will be displayed. See if there are any alerts.

Feel free to share a screenshot if you want. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

    Let me know the result.

Feel free to ask back any questions.

    Thanks for the clarification.

These minidumps also mention the AMD graphics driver as the cause of the crashes. No other drivers are mentioned.

In this case, I suggest doing the following:

(That's fine if you want to wait and see if uninstalling the apps will have any positive effect.)

    • Go to the MSI website using the link below, download the latest Chipset driver, and install it.

    https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B650-GAMING-PLUS-WIFI/support#driver

    Driver name: AMD Chipset Driver

    Version: 7.06.24.2226

(Extract the ZIP file, run the file "AMD_Chipset_Software", and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.)

    • I noticed that the motherboard BIOS is outdated. I suggest you update it by following MSI's instructions.

Then, see if the system will work stably.

If the crash occurs again after doing this, please share the minidump it created.

I will explain why I suggested this:

The chipset is a vital component responsible for managing communication between the processor and external devices connected to the motherboard, such as the graphics card.

A compatibility issue with chipset drivers can make the system unstable to the point of experiencing BSODs or abrupt shutdowns.

Updating the BIOS plays a crucial role in addressing system instability and improving overall performance. It ensures compatibility with newer hardware and resolves known issues that might affect the system's functionality.

Feel free to ask back any questions.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

The minidump indicates the driver "amdkmdag.sys" as the cause of the crash. This driver belongs to your AMD graphics card.

I suggest performing a clean install of the AMD graphics driver as instructed below.

Download the latest driver for your graphics card from the AMD website. Then, use the free DDU tool to remove the current driver. Then, install the latest driver using the installer you downloaded.

I suggest disconnecting from the internet during the entire procedure.

(Turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect the Ethernet cable.)

    DDU: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

    AMD driver download: https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/graphics/radeon-rx/radeon-rx-9000-series/amd-radeon-rx-9070-xt.html

(Run the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.)

See if the system will work stably after this.

If the crash occurs again after doing this, share the minidump it created.

If you need a tutorial for using DDU, I recommend the video below.

The UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (0x7F) error you are experiencing can be caused by several factors, particularly related to hardware or driver issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can consider:

    1. Update Drivers: Ensure that all your drivers, especially for your graphics card and any VR-related software, are fully updated. Sometimes, outdated drivers can lead to system instability when waking from sleep.
    2. Check for Faulty Hardware: Since you mentioned the issue occurs when waking from sleep, it could be related to hardware compatibility. Check your RAM and other components for any faults. You can also run hardware diagnostics provided by your system manufacturer.
    3. Event Viewer Analysis: You noted errors in the Event Viewer. Look for critical errors that occurred around the same time as the crashes. This can help identify if a specific driver or hardware component is causing the issue.
    4. Power Settings: Adjust your power settings to prevent the system from entering sleep mode or to change how it handles sleep. Sometimes, specific power settings can lead to conflicts with hardware.
    5. Disable Fast Startup: Disabling Fast Startup in the Power Options can sometimes resolve issues related to sleep and wake cycles.
    6. Reinstall VR Software: If you suspect the VR headset is causing issues, try uninstalling and reinstalling the software associated with it.
    7. System Restore: If the problem started occurring after a recent update or installation, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state.
    8. Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that your Windows installation is fully up to date, as Microsoft often releases patches that can resolve such issues.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you might consider reinstalling Windows as a last resort, but it is advisable to try these troubleshooting steps first.
