I’ve fixed the issue now. Thank you to everyone who suggested solutions. The fix for me was disabling the “Enable in-game overlay” option in Discord.
Discord Causes My Microphone to Mute Whenever a Game Starts, How to fix it?
Hello,
I need help with an issue on Windows 10. My USB microphone (EGA TYPE MC5) keeps getting automatically muted whenever I launch any game that uses the microphone.
- This problem did not happen before — the microphone previously worked completely fine with all games and applications. It suddenly started happening without any system changes that I am aware of. (Windows 10)
- When the issue occurs, the microphone becomes muted, but it does not get disabled.
- The input volume stays the same — Windows simply toggles the mute state by itself.
- I can manually unmute it, and it works again.
- However, as soon as I open a game or any program that requires microphone input, Windows mutes the microphone again automatically.
- This issue only occurs when I'm using Discord.
I have already tried many common solutions (driver updates, reinstalling audio devices, privacy settings, disabling exclusive mode, restarting audio services, Discord reset, etc.), but the issue still persists.
Could anyone help identify what might cause Windows to auto-mute a recording device? And how can I prevent the microphone from muting itself whenever an application tries to access it?
Thank you.

- Disable Exclusive Mode:
- Open Sound settings > Recording tab.
- Select your microphone (EGA TYPE MC5) > Properties > Advanced tab.
- Uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" and "Give exclusive mode applications priority".
- Click Apply and OK.
- Reset Discord Cache:
- Close Discord completely.
- Navigate to
%AppData%\Discord. - Delete the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders.
- Restart Discord.
If the issue persists, you may need to check for any recent updates or changes in Discord settings that could be affecting the microphone.

Based on your description and the image, the issue is not with the volume level but with the mute state being toggled automatically when Discord and a game are running.
First, check Windows Communication Settings. Open Control Panel, go to Sound, then the Communications tab. Make sure “Do nothing” is selected. If it is set to “Reduce volume” or similar, Windows may mute the microphone when detecting communication activity.
Next, disable Exclusive Mode. Open the Sound settings, go to the Recording tab, select your microphone (EGA TYPE MC5), and click Properties. In the Microphone Properties window, go to the Advanced tab. Under Exclusive Mode, you will see two options: “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” and “Give exclusive mode applications priority.” Uncheck both boxes, then click Apply and OK.
Finally, reset Discord’s cache. Close Discord completely, then navigate to
%AppData%\Discord. Delete the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders, and restart Discord.Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
