How to migrate chat history from one MS Teams account to another

Dear all,

How to migrate chat history from one account to another in MS Teams ?

Is there any way to download chat history and reload it from the new account ?

Of course the email address of the main account can be changed to a new one.

However, my case is quite peculiar where a new account has been given to me and I have two MS Teams accounts as of now with the old one about to be terminated soon.

I need support to back my chat history from my old account and migrate all the history to a new account.

I have approached several people including organization's IT on this to no avail.

The only option given to me was to login to old account and manually copy all chat history to new account. This is a tedious task since lots of data involved.

Is there any solution to this ?

If any Microsoft admins can support in this case would be grateful. Else I loose all my data which is extremely critical to my function.

Thanks,

Migrating chat history from one Microsoft Teams account to another is not directly supported as there is no built-in feature to export and import chat history. However, you can use the Teams data export tool to export your data, which includes chat history, from your old account. Here are the steps you can follow:

    1. Access the Teams Data Export Tool: You need to be a global administrator to access this tool. You can request access through the Microsoft Form provided by Microsoft.
    2. Export Data: Once you have access, you can export your data, including 1:1 chats, group chats, meeting chats, and channel messages. The exported data will be in a ZIP file containing JSON files.
    3. Review Exported Data: After exporting, you can review the data, but note that you cannot import it back into a new Teams account. You will have to manually copy important information from the exported files.
    4. Manual Copying: Unfortunately, since there is no direct way to import the chat history into the new account, you may need to manually copy critical information from the exported data to your new Teams account.

While this process may not be ideal, it is currently the best option available for migrating chat history between accounts.

    Hello @Subramanian Balaji [EXT]

    Welcome to Q&A forum!

In this case, I need to confirm that migrating chat history between two Microsoft Teams accounts isn’t straightforward because Teams doesn’t provide a built-in feature for transferring conversations.

I believe many other users also have the same concern when transferring accounts. Therefore, it would be really valuable if you could visit the Feedback community to find similar feedback and vote for it.
Our product team is in charge of the site, and they constantly check customer reviews and feedback, The higher votes, the more attention the related team will pay on. And a lot of the features are developed and improved based on customer feedback.

I have found some related feedback from other users:

After sending your feedback, you can share the link in this thread so I and other users can vote it to gain more attentions.

If you only need files and shared resources, move them from OneDrive/SharePoint linked to the old account to the new one.

Teams chat files are usually stored in OneDrive for Business linked to your account.

    • Sign in to your old account’s OneDrive.
    • Select the files or folders you want to move.
    • Click "Download" to your computer.
    • Sign in to your new account’s OneDrive and Upload the files.
    • You can click on each conversation, choose "Shared" -> "File" to check all files and links has been shared.
