Files not viewing in Explorer view pane

Hi.

When opening file explorer and highlighting a file to view in the viewing pane I get an message as follows. " The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents".

This is fine but sometimes I just want to view the files in the view pane as that is what it is for.

Your help would be appreciated.

Hi. Thanks for your thoughts on this. I can unblock individual files but cant seem to work it out for multiple files. I've copy and pasted the power shell routine that doesnt appear to have made any impact. With regard to the follwoing: "Optionally adjust Group Policy/registry settings to suppress warnings (not recommended unless in a trusted environment)". This is a little beyond my capabilities.

These updates are frustrating as we use the viewer quite a lot as easier to open and close , etc.

I think the last resort is to access the official Microsoft Support for Business contact portal at this URL: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/

This is the central hub for all business product support. Once on the page, you will be guided through a few steps to get the specific contact details for your issue:

    • Describe your problem: You can enter keywords like ”File Explorer’s preview in Windows 11"
    • Select a product: Choose the relevant product, such as "Windows"
    • Get support options: The website will then present you with the most up-to-date contact methods for your region, which often includes a direct phone number for commercial support.

I think this kind of support would facilitate you more easily, as it is a live chat that provides you with simultaneous consultancy.

    Hello Wayne,

The message you’re seeing in File Explorer’s preview is part of new security protections in Windows 11 (24H2/25H2). Windows flags files downloaded from the internet or stored on network shares as “untrusted,” which blocks previews by default.

To view these files in the preview pane, you can:

Right‑click the file → Properties → select Unblock.

Use PowerShell (Unblock-File) to clear the security tag for multiple files.

Optionally adjust Group Policy/registry settings to suppress warnings (not recommended unless in a trusted environment).

You can try some workaround from here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5585306/file-explorer-not-previewing-pdf-files-since-25h2

I hope it's helpful. And if it is, please hit "accept answer" so this response benefits the community, too.

    Harry.

The message you are encountering when trying to preview files in Windows File Explorer indicates that the system is warning you about potential risks associated with the file. This is a security feature designed to protect your computer from harmful files. Unfortunately, if you receive this warning, it means that Windows is not allowing you to preview the file directly in the Preview Pane for safety reasons.

If you trust the file and its source, you can choose to open the file directly in its associated application instead of previewing it. However, if you frequently need to preview files without these warnings, you may consider adjusting your security settings, but be cautious as this may expose your system to risks.

Additionally, enabling the preview handlers in Windows settings may help, but it is essential to ensure that the necessary settings are configured correctly to allow previews without warnings, while also maintaining your system's security.

For more detailed troubleshooting, you may want to check the advanced settings in Windows File Explorer to ensure that preview handlers are enabled.
