I accidentally selected 'Restore from Backup' when setting up my new laptop, is there any way to undo this?

I got an HP Omen 16 Slim running Windows 11 for my birthday, and I've been going through the process of setting it up. I got to the 'Restore from Backup' step, and accidentally proceeded with restoring the data of my current laptop (also running win11) over the blank slate of the new laptop. My new laptop is currently sitting on the 'Register and Protect' page, and there isn't an arrow letting me go back or revert the changes.

What I want to know is:

  • Will anything happen to the data currently on my old laptop?
  • Is there any way to prevent/undo the restoration of data from my old laptop onto my new one? (i would like to have my new laptop begin on a blank slate)
  • If not, is there any way to prevent them from having their data be synced permanently?
  • Lastly, what exactly will be transferred over to my new laptop? (eg: installed apps, screenshots, app data)

From what I understand, and I may be wrong, the data such as OneDrive files on each laptop will now be synced and changes on one will affect the other. Is there anything I can do for this not to be the case? edit: it's really late for me as of writing this, would shutting off my laptop when i go to bed mess with the setup process at all?

1. Will anything happen to the data currently on my old laptop? No, your old laptop's data will not be affected. The "Restore from Backup" feature only copies data from your old device to the new one - it doesn't delete or modify anything on your original laptop.

2. Is there any way to prevent/undo the restoration of data from my old laptop onto my new one? Yes, you can reset your new laptop to factory settings. Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC, then choose "Remove everything" to completely wipe the restored data and start fresh. This will return your HP Omen to its original out-of-box state.

3. If not, is there any way to prevent them from having their data be synced permanently? Since you can reset the laptop, this isn't necessary. But for future reference, you can disable automatic syncing by going to Settings > Accounts > Windows Backup and turning off backup options, or by unlinking your Microsoft account during setup.

4. What exactly will be transferred over to my new laptop? Typically, Windows backup restoration transfers: user files (documents, pictures, videos), system settings, browser bookmarks, application preferences, and some app data. However, it does NOT transfer installed applications themselves - you'll need to reinstall programs manually. OneDrive files aren't directly transferred but will sync if you're signed into the same Microsoft account.

5. About OneDrive syncing: You're correct that if both laptops use the same Microsoft account with OneDrive enabled, files will sync between devices. To prevent this:

  • During setup, choose a local account instead of a Microsoft account
  • Or after setup, go to OneDrive settings and disable sync for specific folders
  • You can also use different Microsoft accounts for each laptop

6. Will shutting off my laptop mess with the setup process? At the "Register and Protect" stage, safely shutting down won't cause problems. Windows setup is designed to handle interruptions. When you power back on, it will either resume from where you left off or restart the setup process, giving you another chance to avoid the backup restoration step.

Recommended immediate action: Since you're tired, go ahead and shut down safely. When you're ready tomorrow:

  1. Power on and let setup resume
  2. When prompted, choose "I don't have internet" if possible to skip Microsoft account setup
  3. Or proceed to reset the PC as described above to start completely fresh

When you select 'Restore from Backup' during the setup of your new laptop, the following points are relevant to your situation:

    1. Impact on Old Laptop Data: The restoration process typically does not affect the data on your old laptop. The backup is meant to copy settings and apps to the new device without altering the original data on the source device.
    2. Undoing the Restoration: Unfortunately, if you have already proceeded with the restoration and are on the 'Register and Protect' page, there is no direct way to undo the restoration at this stage. You may need to complete the setup and then consider resetting the new laptop to start fresh.
    3. Preventing Permanent Sync: To prevent data from being synced permanently between the two laptops, you can manage your Microsoft account settings. If you have enabled OneDrive, you can choose to disable syncing for specific folders or even unlink OneDrive from the new laptop after setup is complete.
    4. What Will Be Transferred: The restoration process will typically transfer user settings, preferences, and the list of installed Microsoft Store apps. However, it may not transfer all app data or files unless they are specifically included in the backup settings.
    5. OneDrive Syncing: If you are using OneDrive, files stored there will sync across devices. To prevent this, you can either pause syncing or adjust your OneDrive settings to choose which folders to sync or to stop syncing altogether.

If you want to start over with your new laptop, you may need to perform a factory reset after completing the initial setup.
