I cannot get the Sent items in Gmail to sync into the Outlook Sent folder. All other folders sync. I have Windows 11 and done the following already - Unchecked box in Outlook settings that says "Don't save copies of sent items" Gmail account set to IMAP Chose in OPTIONS in Outlook - "Save copies of messages in the SEnt items folder In GMAIL settings chose SHOW in IMAP for sent label

This worked, sort of, for me. Changing the root folder path hung Outlook until I killed and restarted Outlook, then it re-enumderated the folders under gmail again, and started actually downloading messages in Sent Items. Great! But other root level folders that I had created in Gmail no longer showed up because they were not under the [Gmail] subfolder hierarchy. Oddly, when I went back into the above dialog and then REMOVED the [Gmail] root folder path, restarted Outlook, it refreshed my gmail folders list again and then began downloading all the Sent Items again. So it worked in the long run by changing the root folder path to [Gmail] and then undoing that again later. Very strange behavior.

There was probably a corruption with the way the Sent Items folder was linked to the cache and therefor didn't (properly) sync. Adjusting the root folder path will trigger a forced resync of the entire cache and thus also got rid of the corruption. Changing it back, forces yet another resync.
In this case, you probably could have fixed it by renaming the ost-file (cache file) of your account to .old when Outlook was closed.
Another thing you could have tried in this case was starting Outlook with the /resetfolders command line switch. This performs some checks on the default folders (like the Sent Items folder) and resets some properties if needed so that they are properly recognized as default folders again. In this case, this also included the mapping with the online folder it syncs with. It has a bit of a lower success rate, but it has the benefit of being quick and in the case it does work, you wouldn't have to resync your entire mailbox again.
Appreciate the details on likely cause, cache, and /resetfolders info for future reference. This was a brand new Win11 fresh install, installed Office 2024 (Outlook Classic), added my gmail account through the wizard and that was it. Inbox worked fine, but Sent Items and Trash would not sync even after restarts until I did the steps above. I could see the folders were all listed and subscribed, but they appeared empty in Outlook. Don't know why a brand new .ost would be corrupt or require a cache flush. For me I'm just glad this worked. For non technical folks I'm surprised this isn't a bigger complaint, maybe I was just unlucky, but lucky to find this thread and the root folder hack that worked. Thanks again for the tips!

Thank you very much. I had done everything else accepted the Root Path Folder was entered as INBOX. This is what suggested by Microsoft Copilot. Now that I have entered Gmail,this has solved the problem and things are working fine. This further brings the point that AI assistants are not always perfect and human assistance is needed.

Outlook could be creating its own copy of sent items. So you need to check that.

Hi. I have the same issue but when I follow the steps in Kimberley's answwer I can't get past "Click more settings" as I don't have a More Settings option ?

Kimberly - after I click Change for my Gmail a "IMAP Account Settings window" opens up - but it does not have any button for "More Settings". The two buttons at the bottom are: "Reset Mail Settings" and NEXT
Hitting reset mail settings does not seem to do anything
Hitting NEXT comes back with "Account successfully updated" and a bottom at bottom saying DONE

You should be able to access all the available Outlook IMAP settings using the Control Panel Mail app.
But, you will not find a “Save sent items in the following folder on the server” setting. It has been removed for IMAP accounts.
When you use an IMAP account, you can't change where sent items are stored, although you can turn off saving of sent messages entirely.
I will ask, again, have you checked that you are "Subscribed" to the GMail Sent Items folder?

Am I reading that right - You do have a GMail Sent folder in Outlook, but it's empty? vs No Sent folder at all?
And if you look at the Sent label in GMail, there is something there?
Thanks - yes I have a folder there but nothing is saving to it. I have Sent on the Gmail browser app and it has the sent items all up to date. Just not appearing in Outlook folders.

There is an old bug from Outlook 2019 where the GMail folders don't sync because of the Outlook IMAP Settings not having "Root Folder" set to "Inbox". But they must have fixed that one by now? I'm not even sure there is a "Root Folder" setting in the latest Outlook IMAP options.
Yes they do. Just checked and there is a root path currently empty.

Feb 10, 2025, 6:24 PM When I did the suggestion in 6. above of setting the root folder path to INBOX the problems vanished! However, at the same time so did the 40 odd sub-folders that I had created with emails in a folder called 'Personal'. So I removed the INBOX setting, the folders reappeared, and so did the sending email problem, as well as not showing sent items. The problem was thus somewhow related to having all these subfolders. So I created a separate email account, moved all the subfolders to that, and had a 'clean' Gmail install. I reset the INBOX option on, and since then no issues.
Went back and looked at some old IMAP Root Folder path bookmarks I had. This is still an issue in 2025?
Right. Tried that with the Gmail. Sent folder vanished. took it out, sent folder reappeared. Tried again this time copy and paste the actual Gmail in the article with the square brackets and hey presto - sent items reappered and folder up to date. Thanks. Can't believe this is just me and there must be lots more out there, but this worked. Brilliant. Steve

If it were impacting everyone who adds a GMail account to Classic Outlook it would be all over the forums. But I only see a few scattered reports like this one. Have to assume that there is a hiccup during setup that only happens for a lucky few. No idea what or why.
Steve and Hornblower - I also was able to get the Sent folder populated in "Microsoft Classic" from my Gmail web account, by setting the Root folder in Microsoft to [GMAIL].
Sharing your expertise and experience was very helpful.
Also I did not need to set all my labels as "children" to a [MAIL] label as suggested in the Robert365 article (https://robert365.com/article/gmailroot) to get them back in Outlook.
