This is a new, recent issue that has started since approx. the 8th of February. My team has researched the errors but could not find any information about this.

I believe it to be related to: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/clients-and-mobile-in-exchange-online/deprecation-of-basic-authentication-exchange-online

Please note:

  • Multiple users with normal configurations have experienced this issue - no one so far has been able to add the account
  • We have performed all available Windows updates
  • We are not changing any settings while adding the account. It's the default ones.

All that we are attempting to do is add a GMAIL account on OUTLOOK.

We go to File>Add Account and enter the email address.

It shows a Google-like interface and goes through all the usual steps (Consent, 2FA, etc.)

After all that has been done and it gets to the final step before closing off, it comes up with either of the below errors

When you go to Change Account Settings the settings are as below:

To attempt to resolve the issue we have tried the below:

https://www.kerneldatarecovery.com/blog/tips-to-fix-we-couldnt-create-the-outlook-data-file-error/ - Does not fix it

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?visit_id=638120612921162020-2626408049&hl=en-GB&rd=1#zippy= - Tried all that was suggested, does not fix it

It's not write-protected and most definitely isn't full.

Adding a GMAIL account on the Mail app for Windows works, we need it working on Outlook.

If you need any info, let me know

To anyone struggling to find the answer, I may have found it. I spent almost 2 hours searching through countless forums, and came across this response:

*"For security reasons, third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account, using only your username and password, are no longer supported by Google, as of 30 May, 2022 https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

You now have to use an Application Password as your password to access Gmail from the third party app, https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en"*

Google's steps are dated they as are constantly updating their UI and navigation, so I will give an updated step-by-step:

    1. Go to Google (sign into the account you wish to add) and Click the Google Account Icon
    2. Click 'Manage Your Google Account'
    3. Click the 'Security' Tab and scroll down to 'How you sign in to Google'
    4. Click '2-Step Verification'
    5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'App Passwords'
    6. You are now at the page where you can make an auto-generated password for Outlook. To do so, select 'Mail' from the App drop-down options, and 'Windows Computer' from the Device drop-down options, then click 'Generate'
    7. Copy the generated password
    8. Open Outlook and setup the Gmail account using 'Outlook Mail Setup' (File>Account Settings>Manage Profiles>Yes>Email Accounts...>New...)
    9. You DO NOT need to use Manual Setup. Auto setup will work as long as you paste the auto-generated password you created and copied in Steps 6 and 7.
    10. Boom! Say goodbye to opening Gmail in your browser!

Hope this helped save you a little time and hassle. I will include the link below to where I cited the above quote:
