How to obtain and install Windows 10??

Today the touchpad on my Dell XPS 13 9365 randomly stopped working. I am not a technical person but did my best to exercise my google-fu and make it work again. (Yes, I did in fact restart the computer multiple times. Then I looked at YouTube videos on how to enable the touchpad--which my computer is no longer recognizing, and which is not even an option in my devices like it is in every video I have watched).

As far as I can tell, the only potential cause of this is Windows 11. (The I2C HID drivers are not working, apparently. The status codes include words like "had problem" and "disableable." My computer says these drivers are a Microsoft Windows product. There is a button to press to update them, but I am unable to press the button--it's greyed out as though that is not an option. I can't figure out where else to look to get updated driers.) It turns out Windows 11 is not compatible with my computer, and neither Microsoft nor Dell bothered to warn me before Microsoft auto-updated it. Dell's website says "don't do it!" but then says I can get drivers from Microsoft. I can't find any drivers. When I search, Microsoft tells me to get drivers from Dell.

According to the Microsoft website, the only way to "rollback" to Windows 10 is to do it within 10 days of installing Windows 11--something Microsoft also conveniently neglected to tell me. Apparently there is no actual consumer support for individuals.

Beyond the obvious annoying ("just use a USB mouse!") and the expensive ("just buy a new computer!") can someone explain what I can do to fix this sh*tshow? Or how to get a person at Microsoft to help me?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

To obtain and install Windows 10, you can follow these steps:

    1. Download the Windows 10 Installation Media: Go to the Microsoft website and download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
    2. Create Installation Media: Use the tool to create a bootable USB drive or download an ISO file.
    3. Install Windows 10: If using a USB drive, insert it into your computer and boot from it. If using an ISO, mount it and run Setup.exe from within Windows.
    4. Follow the Setup Wizard: Choose to keep your personal files and apps if you want to retain your data, or select a clean installation if you prefer.
    5. Complete Installation: Follow the prompts to complete the installation process.

If you are experiencing issues with drivers after upgrading to Windows 11, consider checking the Dell website for specific drivers for your model, or use the Windows Update feature to check for any available updates that might resolve the touchpad issue. If the touchpad is not recognized, it may require troubleshooting through the Device Manager or reinstalling the drivers manually.

If you need to roll back to Windows 10 and the 10-day window has passed, you may need to perform a clean installation of Windows 10, which will require backing up your data first.

For further assistance, you can reach out to Microsoft Support directly through their support page or community forums.

Hello ERB, thanks for posting this in our community.

Your Dell XPS 13 9365 likely lost touchpad functionality because Windows 11 auto-updated on a device that Dell does not officially support for Windows 11. The I2C HID driver, which is responsible for touchpad input, is either corrupted, incompatible, or disabled. Rollback to Windows 10 is no longer available because the 10-day grace period expired.

First, confirm the device status by opening Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager). Expand Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices. Look for I2C HID Device or Touchpad entries. If you see a yellow triangle or an error like “Code 10” or “Code 43,” the driver is broken. If the device is missing entirely, Windows isn’t detecting the hardware.

Next, reinstall the HID drivers. Since the update button is greyed out, uninstall the problematic driver by right-clicking the I2C HID device, selecting Uninstall device, and checking “Delete driver software.” Restart your PC. Then download the latest Dell Touchpad and I2C drivers for Windows 10 from Dell Support. Enter your Service Tag or select XPS 13 9365. Under Drivers & Downloads, filter for Windows 10 and download the Intel Serial IO driver and Dell Touchpad driver. Install these drivers manually.

If Windows 11 blocks installation, right-click the installer, go to Properties, select Compatibility, and run it in Windows 10 mode. Alternatively, use Device Manager to update the driver manually by browsing your computer, selecting “Let me pick,” and using “Have Disk” to point to the extracted driver folder.

If you want to roll back to Windows 10 even after the 10-day period, you’ll need to perform a clean install. Download the Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft’s download page and use the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB. Back up your files, boot from the USB, and install Windows 10 using the Custom Install option, formatting the system partition. After installation, reinstall the Dell drivers as mentioned earlier.

    Kind regards,

    John Oli
