I am trying to find out how to edit a document in Word 2024. It only allows me to clip a document. The instructions online are not very clear.

Do the Office applications report that they are unlicensed?

If you are in an organization (work, education), talk to your local IT support. They will deal with activation issues.

Note that Office Professional 2024 or Office Professional Plus 2024 are volume license products, so you can't activate them if you are a consumer ("home user"). If someone sold you this license letting you believe that you purchased a consumer license, ask for your money back.

Thanks for sharing the details, Robert! Quick test to isolate the problem

    Try this:

    Open Word

    1. Create a New Blank Document

    Paste text there

    • Works → the original file is restricted, continue with the checks below.
    • Doesn’t work → Word installation or activation issue, check activation:

    Go to File → Account

    Under Product Information:

    • It should say Product Activated

    If not:

    • Sign in with the account used to activate via Microsoft

Check 1 - if the document is in Protected View

If Word only lets you copy text but not edit it, the file is usually opened in Protected View.

    How to fix

    • Open the document
    • Look at the yellow bar at the top
    • Click Enable Editing

Once enabled, full editing (typing, pasting, formatting) works immediately.

Check 2 - The document may be Read-Only or locked

    Check Read-Only

    • Click File → Info
    • If you see Read-only, Protected, or Editing restricted
    • Click Enable Editing or Edit Anyway

    Check Restrict Editing

Go to Review → Restrict Editing

If it’s on, click Stop Protection

    • (No password = instant unlock)

Check 3 - The file might be a PDF or converted file

Word lets you copy text from PDFs but limits editing unless converted.

    Fix

    • Close the file
    • Open Word
    • Click File → Open
    • Select the PDF
    • When prompted, click OK to convert

    After conversion, editing works normally.

Check 4 - You may be in Viewing Mode (not Editing Mode)

    Fix

    • Look at the bottom-right of Word
    • If it says Viewing:
      • Click Edit Document
      • Or switch to View → Print Layout

See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly

To edit a Word document by copying and pasting, you can follow these general steps, which should apply to Microsoft Word 2024 as well:

    1. Open the Document: Start by opening the Word document you want to edit.
    2. Select the Text: Click and drag your mouse over the text you want to copy to highlight it.
    3. Copy the Text: Right-click on the highlighted text and select Copy, or you can press Ctrl + C on your keyboard.
    4. Paste the Text: Navigate to the location in the document where you want to paste the copied text. Right-click and select Paste, or press Ctrl + V on your keyboard.
    5. Edit as Needed: Once pasted, you can edit the text as needed. You can also format it using the options available in the Ribbon.

If you encounter issues with the Paste Special option or if it’s not working as expected, ensure that the option is enabled in your settings:

    • Go to File > Options > Advanced.
    • Under Cut, copy and paste, make sure the Show Paste Options button when content is pasted is checked.

If you continue to have difficulties, consider checking for any conflicting add-ins or trying to start Word in Safe Mode to troubleshoot further.
