    Hi @Robert Blair

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out regarding your Surface Pro. I understand that your keyboard has stopped responding. I would be happy to guide you through the troubleshooting steps to determine if this is a software glitch or a hardware matter covered under your warranty.

To resolve this, please follow these steps in order:

    1. Physical inspection

    • Disconnect and Reconnect: Detach the Type Cover, wait 10 seconds, and snap it back on firmly.
    • Clean the Connectors: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the magnetic pins on both the keyboard and the Surface. Ensure no debris is obstructing the connection.

    2. Hardware verification (UEFI Test)

This is an important step to see if the keyboard is physically functional:

    1. Shut down your Surface.
    2. Hold the Volume Up (+) button, then press and release the Power button.
    3. Release Volume Up when the logo appears.
    4. If the keyboard works to navigate this menu, the hardware is fine, and we simply need to update your software.

    3. Software refresh

If the keyboard worked in the UEFI menu, please boot back into Windows and:

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates.
    • Right-click Start > Device Manager, expand Keyboards, right-click the Surface Type Cover Filter Device, and select Uninstall. Restart your device immediately.

Since your Surface was purchased in June 2025, it remains well within the one-year manufacturer warranty period. If the keyboard remains unresponsive even after these troubleshooting steps, particularly the UEFI test, it likely indicates a hardware-level issue. In this case, I recommend reaching out to Microsoft Surface Support or visiting an authorized service center to initiate a warranty claim. For the fastest assistance, open the Surface app on your device, navigate to Help & Support, and select Get Help to run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit or connect directly with a live agent via chat or callback. Please have your serial number (visible on the app's home screen) and proof of purchase ready to expedite your request.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

If your Surface Pro keyboard is not working at all, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check the Connection: Ensure that the keyboard is properly connected to the Surface Pro. If it is a detachable keyboard, try removing and reattaching it.
    2. Reset the Firmware: If the keyboard or touchpad is unresponsive in Windows PE, you might need to reset the firmware. To do this, press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds. If you are connected to a power supply unit (PSU), hold the Power button until you see the light at the end of the PSU cord briefly turn off before turning back on.
    3. Update Drivers: Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your Surface device. You can download the latest Surface .msi file for your Surface device and extract the contents to install the drivers.
    4. Troubleshoot Keyboard Issues: You can refer to the troubleshooting guide for Surface Type Cover or Keyboard. This guide provides specific steps to resolve common issues with the keyboard.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.
