I was successfully using excel however I don't know what happened or if I accidentally clicked something. Suddenly excel became unresponsive, and wouldn't open even after restarting and putting the computer off and opening it again.

If Excel is not opening or is unresponsive, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1. Turn Off Add-Ins: Sometimes, add-ins can cause Excel to become unresponsive. You can disable them by following these steps:
      • Open Excel and go to the File menu, then select Options.
      • Click on Add-Ins.
      • In the Manage list at the bottom, select COM Add-Ins and click Go.
      • Uncheck one add-in at a time, click OK, and restart Excel to see if it opens.
      • Repeat this process for Excel Add-Ins if necessary.
    2. Repair Office: If turning off add-ins does not work, you can try repairing your Office installation:
      • For Windows 10, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Find your Office program, select it, and click Modify. Choose Online Repair and follow the prompts.
      • For Windows 8 or 7, access the Control Panel, select Uninstall a program, find Microsoft 365, and choose Change to initiate the repair.
    3. Reset File Associations: Ensure that Excel is set as the default program for opening Excel files:
      • Right-click an Excel file, select Properties, and check the Opens with section. If it’s not set to Excel, click Change and select Excel as the default app.
    4. Check Compatibility Mode: Ensure that Excel is not running in Compatibility mode, which can cause issues with opening files.
    5. Reinstall Office: If none of the above steps work, consider uninstalling and then reinstalling Microsoft Office.

If the problem persists after trying these solutions, you may need to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

May I please know if you're having trouble opening all Excel files, or just specific ones?

Try opening Excel in Safe Mode to determine if any add-ins are causing the issue:

    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Type excel /safe and press Enter.
    3. Open any Excel file and see if it runs normally.

If Excel works correctly in Safe Mode, third‑party add-ins are likely causing the issue.

If you're still having problems, try repairing your Office applications:

    1. Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Locate Microsoft Office in the list, click the three ellipsis (...) icon, and select Modify.
    3. Select Online Repair, then click Repair and follow the on-screen instructions.
