How to connect Thunderbird 146.0.1 to outlook.com

I have an outlook.com email account in my Microsoft 365 Family subscription. Thunderbird supports EWS (email only) starting with version 145. I'm running 146.0.1 but am unable to connect it to my outlook.com account. I've seen conflicting reports about whether outlook.com still supports EWS or has moved to the Graph API. At one point in my attempts to connect manually, Thunderbird wanted the "endpoint url" for my outlook.com account.

  1. Can I still connect to outlook.com with EWS?
  2. What is the endpoint url for my outlook.com account?

Meanwhile, I can connect using IMAP.

    Hello,

OAuth for EWS is only available to Exchange Online work or school tenants, and Microsoft has announced EWS in Exchange Online will be blocked for non‑Microsoft apps.

The canonical Exchange Online EWS URL is https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx, but it applies to organizational tenants where EWS is permitted, not to consumer Outlook.com.

Best path today is to keep using Thunderbird with IMAP and SMTP using OAuth2.

In Thunderbird, set Authentication method to OAuth2 for both incoming and outgoing. Use outlook.office365.com on port 993 with SSL/TLS for IMAP, and smtp-mail.outlook.com on port 587 with STARTTLS for SMTP. In Outlook.com web settings, make sure IMAP is enabled for the account.

    I hope this helps!

You can still connect to Outlook.com using EWS (Exchange Web Services), but it is important to note that Microsoft has been transitioning to the Microsoft Graph API for many services. If you are using Thunderbird 146.0.1, which supports EWS, you should be able to connect, provided that the EWS application policies are set up correctly in your Microsoft 365 environment.

Regarding the endpoint URL for your Outlook.com account, it typically follows the format: https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx. However, if you encounter issues, it may be beneficial to verify the settings or consult the documentation for any updates regarding the use of EWS with Outlook.com.

Since you mentioned that you can connect using IMAP, this is also a viable alternative for accessing your Outlook.com email if EWS presents challenges.
