Why do my documents revert to showing the extension on the folder (macOS)

Some of my documents (not sure if it's all of them, as I've only accessed some of them recently) - after I've opened them and edited them and then closed them, show the file name with the file extension (docx).

I go into the "get info" for the document and make sure the "hide extensions" box is ticked. I've also gone into my Mac and made sure the hide extensions option is selected for Word. Yet....since the last Apple update....the extensions suddenly keep coming back. How do I turn them off permanently?

You may be using Microsoft Word but the OS is Apple.

You should contact Apple Support or use their forums.

You'd better ask in an Apple forum for assistance with Finder settings. Good luck.

It seems that you are experiencing an issue with file extensions appearing in your document names despite having the "Hide extensions" option selected. This problem may have arisen after a recent update to macOS or Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, the context does not provide a specific solution to permanently hide file extensions in Word for Mac after an update. However, you can try the following general troubleshooting steps:

    1. Check System Preferences: Go to Finder > Preferences > Advanced and ensure that "Show all filename extensions" is unchecked.
    2. Restart Word: Sometimes, simply restarting the application can resolve temporary glitches.
    3. Check for Updates: Ensure that both macOS and Microsoft Word are up to date, as updates may include fixes for such issues.
    4. Reset Preferences: If the problem persists, consider resetting Word preferences by deleting the preference files, which may help resolve the issue.

If the issue continues, you may want to reach out to Microsoft Support for further assistance, as they may have more specific guidance based on the latest updates.
