My windows 11 computer will not shutdown at all, after trying all the ways I've found on the internet

I've tried many ways to shutdown my laptop (MSI). Everytime I try it restarts regardless, even if I do a hard shutoff by the powerbutton, pops right back on as if I hit restart.

I found this problem during a train ride when the notebook wasn´t switching off due to the pitching creating a slight jarr. This an MS Windows 11 (25H2) mess of unprecedent proportions and an unswitched unit then keeps the opened desktop an exposed security hole. I tried so many shutdown attempts that the two methods I use is keyboard windows TAB + X then small menu appears then select shutdown. The other is the drastic measure of depressing the boot reset underneath the notebook. One should never have to resort to such troubles! The standard power off tab becomes useless.

What´s in the next version of Windows to gloat about. More badly thoughtout non workable rubbish ? In addition trying to retrieve a system information failure report results in a "hanged" non functionable program. Get this sorted out !!!

    Hi Steven,

Thank you for reaching out about the issue where your Windows 11 MSI laptop restarts instead of shutting down, as this kind of behavior can be especially frustrating after you have already tried several different solutions. I understand that you have followed multiple shutdown methods found online and that the system still powers back on even after using the physical power button, which understandably makes the issue feel persistent and hard to pin down. I completely get how disruptive this can be particularly when the device does not stay powered off and appears to disregard expected shutdown behavior.

One additional troubleshooting approach that often helps in this scenario is disabling Windows fast startup and hybrid shutdown features since these power management components can sometimes cause the system to resume instead of fully shutting down when there are driver or firmware conflicts. You can do this by opening Control Panel and going to Power Options, choosing what the power buttons do, selecting Change settings that are currently unavailable then turning off Fast Startup before saving the changes and performing a full shutdown. It is also recommended to check for any pending Windows updates along with MSI BIOS or firmware updates as outdated firmware can trigger automatic power on behavior during the shutdown process at the hardware level. In addition performing a clean boot by disabling all non‑Microsoft startup services can help rule out background system processes or third‑party services that may be intercepting the shutdown command and forcing a restart.

After disabling fast startup and applying any available BIOS or firmware updates, does the laptop power down completely or does it still restart on its own right away.

I hope this answer is helpful if you have further questions feel free to reply back

    Regards,

    Marcelo

It is likely a bug with a recent software push. Here is a hotfix that Microsoft has released to resolve the issue.

If your Windows 11 computer is not shutting down properly and instead restarts, there are a few potential causes to consider:

    1. Power Supply Issues: If the power supply is faulty or underpowered, it may cause the computer to restart instead of shutting down. This can happen if the battery is drained (in laptops) or if there is an interruption in power (in desktops).
    2. Blocked Processes: Sometimes, Windows processes may block the shutdown operation. This can occur if a service does not end properly or if there is a kernel issue. You can check for blocked threads using debugging tools.
    3. Settings Configuration: Ensure that the settings for automatic restarts are disabled. To do this, right-click on "My Computer", go to "Properties", then "Advanced system settings", and in the "Startup and Recovery" section, uncheck "Automatically restart".
    4. Event ID 41: If the system logs Event ID 41, it indicates that the system has rebooted without a clean shutdown. This can provide clues about what might be causing the issue, such as hardware problems or software conflicts.
    5. Third-party Software: Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with the shutdown process. Booting into Safe Mode can help determine if a third-party service is causing the issue.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consider restoring your system to a previous state or checking for hardware malfunctions.
