How do I prevent Edge from reinstalling itself?

I used the group policy editor and edited the registry to prevent this spyware from installing itself and consuming system resources. However, every so often, I find that the update executable has reinstalled itself and is running. How can I prevent this? I do NOT want this software on my system, and it is not an "integral part" of the OS (as given by the fact that in the EU it can be uninstalled peacefully).

    Hi Wilson,

Microsoft Edge can reinstall itself because Windows treats the Edge updater as a managed system component. Even if you uninstall the browser or block it via Group Policy or the registry, Windows Update can restore it automatically to ensure security and compatibility.

To stop this, first, disable the Edge update services and scheduled tasks: open services.msc and stop/disable the “Microsoft Edge Update Service” entries (edgeupdate.exe and edgeupdatem.exe), and remove any Edge-related tasks in Task Scheduler. Next, double-check that your registry or policy edits fully match Microsoft’s guidelines for blocking updates; partial or incorrect edits can be overridden. If Edge continues reinstalling, you can use official uninstall commands via the Edge installer (msedge.exe /uninstall) combined with the above steps, or specialized scripts designed to remove Edge safely while preventing reinstallation.

This method allows you to remove Edge and prevent it from automatically coming back without affecting other Windows functions.

To prevent Microsoft Edge from reinstalling itself, you can use Group Policy settings to control its updates and installation. Here are some steps you can take:

    1. Disable Microsoft Edge Updates: You can disable updates for Microsoft Edge through the Group Policy Editor. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge Update > Applications > Microsoft Edge and enable the Update policy override. Set it to Update disabled.
    2. Use Registry Editor: If you are comfortable with editing the registry, you can also set a registry key to prevent Edge from being updated or installed. However, be cautious when making changes to the registry, as incorrect changes can affect system stability.
    3. Uninstall Microsoft Edge: If you have not done so already, you can uninstall Microsoft Edge from your system. In some regions, such as the EU, it can be uninstalled without issues. Make sure to check if any remnants of the software are left after uninstallation and remove them.
    4. Monitor Background Processes: Keep an eye on your system's background processes to ensure that no Edge-related processes are running. If you find any, you may need to take further steps to remove them or prevent them from starting.
    5. Use Third-Party Tools: There are third-party tools available that can help manage and prevent unwanted software installations. These tools can provide additional layers of protection against software that tries to reinstall itself.

By following these steps, you should be able to minimize the chances of Microsoft Edge reinstalling itself on your system.
