unusual activity, and human/robot verification

My laptop is indicating unusual activity, and the Walmart website is constantly asking me to complete a human/robot verification. I've already run antivirus (Total 360) and anti-malware scans, and tried many other solutions recommended by Google to fix this problem like delete cookies and web history) , but none of them have worked. All the scans indicate that there are no viruses or malware. I'm turning to this forum to see if anyone has a viable solution. Thanks in advance.

Hi Michele Frazzetta,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

I know that seeing repeated CAPTCHAs or "unusual activity" messages can feel alarming, and I fully respect the caution you have regarding your security.

However, just taking from my personal experience, what you are seeing is sometimes a standard website-side behavior. Ones like Walmart (shopping sites) often increase human-verification checks if the incoming traffic from a specific IP address appears unusual. This is frequently a result of internet service providers assigning shared or recently flagged IP addresses, and it can happen even when your device is completely secure.

Since your antivirus and anti-malware scans have come back clean, with you having already cleared your cookies and history, the evidence strongly suggests the issue lies with the network or the website's security filters rather than your laptop (especially if only the Walmart site shows the verification prompt). A few steps you might find helpful:

  • Restart your router: This can often prompt your provider to refresh your IP address.
  • Wait it out: These flags usually clear automatically over time.
  • Test another device: Try accessing the site from your phone (using cellular data) to see if the behavior persists. This can help confirm that your laptop is functioning correctly.

The unusual activities might have been detected from the scripts of the sites or your internet. Your proactive approach to security is excellent, and it appears your system is indeed well-protected.

It sounds like your laptop may be experiencing issues related to unwanted software or potentially malicious websites. Here are some steps you can take to address the unusual activity and the persistent human/robot verification prompts:

    1. Check for Unwanted Software: Unwanted software can alter your browsing experience and may cause issues like excessive verification prompts. Make sure to check for any programs that you didn't install and that may be difficult to uninstall. You can do this by going to Settings > Apps > Apps & features and uninstalling any suspicious applications.
    2. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: Although you mentioned you've tried this, ensure that you are clearing the cache and cookies properly. Each browser has a different method for doing this, so double-check the steps for your specific browser.
    3. Use a Different Browser: Sometimes, switching to a different browser can help identify if the issue is browser-specific. Try accessing the Walmart website using Microsoft Edge or another browser to see if the problem persists.
    4. Enable Microsoft Defender Antivirus: Ensure that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is enabled on your Windows 10 system. It provides real-time protection against threats and can help detect and remove unwanted software.
    5. Consider Using an Adblocker: Installing an adblocker can help prevent unwanted ads and pop-ups that may be causing the verification prompts. You can find adblockers available for Microsoft Edge and other browsers.
    6. Report the Issue: If the problem continues, consider reporting the issue to Walmart's support or checking their help section for any known issues related to their website.

By following these steps, you should be able to mitigate the unusual activity and verification prompts you're experiencing.
