Hi,
This is April, I'll be happy to assist you. Sorry to hear that you're having issue with Microsoft Family. Let me help you out.
Based on the description of the issue you provided, your computer was set up with your Microsoft account mistakenly categorized as both a child and a manager, causing parental controls to remain active. As a result, you are blocked from certain websites and prompted to request permission from an adult.
Is your mother's Microsoft account still listed as an adult/organizer in your family group?
This issue occurs when your Microsoft account is still considered a "child" account within a Microsoft Family group, even if you've been set as a "manager." On Windows, you cannot remove parental controls from your own account. Only an adult account outside of the child's profile can do this.
Here's how to remove the Restrictions, depending on your situation:
- Remove your account from Microsoft Family Your mother must sign in to her adult Microsoft account (the one that created the family group).
- Go to Microsoft Family in any browser https://account.microsoft.com/family/
- Sign in with her Microsoft account
- Under Family members, find your account.
- Select Remove from family group and confirm.
- Restart your PC. Parental controls will be removed immediately.
- Change your role from child to adult
- Go to Microsoft Family and sign in with your mother account
- Select your profile
- Choose Change role > switch from Member (child) to Organizer (adult)
- if the organizer option isn't available: "Your account shows a display age under 18" "Your mother must remove you from the family"
- Update your Birthdate in your Microsoft account If your account is listed as under 18, Windows will keep enforcing parental controls.
- Sign in to Microsoft Account Profile https://account.live.com/profile
- Go to Edit personal info and update your birthdate to over 18
- Save, sign out and restart your computer.
Simply changing your birthdate won't remove restrictions if your account is still part of a family group. You must be removed from the family for parental controls to disappear.
You cannot remove parental controls from a child account yourself. as Microsoft enforces this restriction for safety and legal reasons. Only an adult Organizer, with an account outside of your profile can lift these restrictions. Since your mother owns the device, the simplest solution is for her to sign in at family.microsoft.com and remove your account from the family group. Once that's done, your account will function as a regular, unrestricted account.
I hope this helps. If you need further assistance you can reply to this message.
Thank you,
April P.
